Meet Isaiah Catubig
then & now . . .

The first picture (with the green arrow) points to Isaiah -- when he joined us as an eighth grader for a Bay Scholars field trip to a Warriors game. His sister, Daniela Catubig (SHC, Class of 2018) was a Bay Scholar at the time and Isaiah was looking forward to becoming one himself. Daniela is now a rising Senior at Manhattan College while Isaiah is a rising senior at SHC. The second picture will make even more sense once you watch the Fireside Chats with Isaiah below!

Isaiah's English teacher, Dr. Stewart Grace, captures Isaiah's spirit perfectly:

"Isaiah Catubig is one of those rare individuals whose talent, empathy, inquisitiveness, and leadership come naturally.  I've shared a learning space with Isaiah for two years now, and throughout dozens of assignments, Isaiah has demonstrated time and again that he has much to teach both me and his student colleagues.

That might sound like a strange way for an instructor to describe a pupil, or even a peer to describe a classmate -- but the sheer scope of Isaiah's creativity allows him to not only connect intellectually and emotionally with an audience; rather, it inspires the hearts and minds of those fortunate enough to share his company or experience his work.  In short, Isaiah is someone who pursues and pushes the limits of possibility each and every time he engages with the world.  And frankly, that insatiable curiosity, that unexpected humility, and that astounding work ethic? It's contagious."

A Time for Change
Caitlin and Isaiah discuss his experience as a Bay Scholar at our Partner School, Sacred Heart Cathedral; how being half-Asian and half-Latino has inspired his passion for politics; and how he's already taking steps in Student Government to meet his post-collegiate goals of serving as Mayor of San Francisco and in the House of Representatives.
Real Leaders & Role Models
Caitlin and Isaiah talk about his role models; what he believes defines true leaders; and his other interests outside of politics, including volunteering and philanthropy. Watch to the end for a special message for his mother.

Partner Schools Highlight
As the 2020-2021 school year comes to an end, we acknowledge the pain that was experienced and the resilience that was strengthened in our Bay Scholars. This year created challenges for remote and on-campus instruction. The extracurricular experiences -- in which friendships and lifetime memories are made -- were cancelled, delayed, modified, and shortened: athletic seasons, drama and musical performances, proms, award ceremonies, and graduations. Undaunted, our Bay Scholars have moved through these challenges. Our Partner Schools have done an incredible job in not only attending to students’ academic progress, but also with their social and emotional wellbeing. This month we're highlighting Saint Francis and two of their students who thrived this year despite the challenges . . .
"My name is Iminii Wilmer and I am a rising Senior at Saint Francis High School. I love the community at Saint Francis and being chosen to be a Bay Scholar has been such an honor. Being a part of these two communities gives me really high hopes for my future. One day, I hope to be an OB/GYN. A couple of my classes at Saint Francis have helped me prepare for this. For example, in my Moral Issues class this past year, I made a 30-minute slide show and zoom presentation of the inequities and exploitation of women of color during pregnancy and birth. Doing this assignment made me more educated and aware of this topic. It confirmed my passion of one day wanting to be an OB/GYN and be able to help these women."

"My name is Justin Aldor and I am a rising Sophomore at Saint Francis High School. My favorite event this year was the International Showcase. The event displaying cultures from around the world was so organized and held some amazing performances. Usually, students have the whole semester to prepare for the showcase but because of Covid, they only had a few weeks. But that did not hinder the performers from putting on an amazing show. My favorite performances were the Bollywood dancers and tinikling. Saint Francis also played virtual performances on the projector for students who couldn't attend the event in person. Just the effort put in by the students, staff, and tech department was really evident and made for an extraordinary International Showcase. Thank you, Saint Francis, for your efforts in Covid restrictions. Thank you, Caitlin and Bay Scholars, for allowing me to experience events like this."
Time is of the essence!
This year we are raising funds to welcome a new class of freshmen in Fall 2021. To reach our goal of supporting 500 students in 2021-22, our goal is to raise $1.5 million by June 30, 2021. Students like Isaiah, Iminii, and Justin are counting on us. We are happy to report that we have raised $1.4 million as of today -- 93% of our goal!!! Please make a donation today so that we can reach -- and exceed -- this goal!
