This Sunday at First Unitarian Church
Happy Pride Month!

June 13, 2021

Livestreamed at 10:30 am (prelude begins at 10:25)

“Praises for the Journey”

One of my favorite hymns—may be my very favorite—is “Sing Out Praises for the Journey.”  As the lyrics remind us, we stand upon a threshold, facing futures yet unknown.  Some thoughts about life journeys and the journeys that have brought us together, as we go our own ways.

Homily by Rev. Connie Grant.  Music by Ellen Gozion, Instrumental Music Director.  Stephanie Pawlowski, liturgist.

NEWSLETTER NEWS
 Board of Trustees Meeting
June Board of Trustees Meeting
While the church building is closed, the Board of Trustees is holding its monthly meetings via Zoom. The next meeting is on Wednesday, June 16, at 7:00 p.m. Members and friends of the church are welcome to attend.

If you would like to attend a Board meeting as an observer, please contact Board Secretary Eleanor Mayfield (elmayfield@verizon.net), who will arrange for you to receive the Zoom link to join the meeting.

If you have an issue that you would like to speak about at a Board meeting, please send your request to the Board Secretary along with a brief explanation of the issue you would like to bring to the Board’s attention.

When and How Will Our Church Building Re-Open?
Re-opening
Good question – and figuring out a good answer is exactly what the Re-opening Implementation Working Group is working on! Established by the Board of Trustees at its May meeting, the Re-opening Implementation Working Group will work with the Safe Reopening Task Force, the Building and Grounds Committee, and other stakeholders to develop a plan to re-open the church building, and will report back to the Board with proposed concrete steps for doing so. Initial members of the Working Group are Board members Kyle Gracey, Julie Downs, Kate Snow, and Eleanor Mayfield.

And we want to know what you think! What should our priorities be as we formulate a re-opening plan? What concerns do you have about re-opening? Stay tuned for more news soon about a town hall-style meeting where everyone will have an opportunity to share their thoughts, hopes, and concerns. If you don’t want to wait till then to tell us what you think, please send us an email at reopening@first-unitarian-pgh.org.
Transition Support Task Force for Rev. Kate

Got a question for Rev. Kate?
Some information you think she might need from your group? Please contact a member of the Transition Support Task Force with your concern.

As you might guess, the purpose of the Transition Support Task Force is to assist Rev. Kate with any matter related to her transition to our church. The task force also serves as a conduit for questions and information for Rev. Kate from the broader church community. Since Rev. Kate will be extremely busy this summer winding up her ministry in Virginia and making the move to Pittsburgh, it's important that she relies on a small, centralized group of people for assistance and does not have to respond to individual inquiries.

The Transition Support Task Force members are Mary Denison, Julie Downs, Stephanie Pawlowski, and Jim Reitz. Rev. Connie will also provide transition assistance to Rev. Kate. Their contact information is in Breeze, the church directory.

General Assembly June 23-27 - Delegates Sought!

General Assembly (GA) is the annual meeting of our Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).
Participants worship, witness, learn, connect, and make policy for the Association through the democratic process. Anyone may attend. To represent the congregation as a voting delegate at the GA business meetings requires approval by the church’s Board of Trustees. If you are interested in serving as one of our six delegates, please email Eleanor Mayfield at elmayfield@verizon.net.

This year’s theme is “Circle 'Round for Justice ● Healing ● Courage.” Sessions will include the basis of our theological roots, ideas about how to transform our faith, and inspiration for taking action in the world. A variety of workshops and special events will provide registrants with tools to live into our mission and continue the work of our faith—both within UU congregations and in the greater world. More information about workshops and other special events is here: https://www.uua.org/ga/off-site/registrants.

For the second year, GA will be 100% virtual. The cost of registration is $200. Information about financial support for attending GA is available here: https://www.uua.org/ga/registration/financialaid/scholarships

All GA registrants have access to the GA Virtual Participation Portal, which combines multiple participant engagement modes that include chat, Q&A, and polling. Registrants can watch and ask questions in live sessions, including workshops and business sessions. Delegates can also propose amendments in the live business sessions, participate in debates, and vote in general sessions. More information about the role of delegates is available here: https://www.uua.org/ga/off-site/registrants/delegates.

A d20 RPG experience!
Your gaming enthusiast LRED, Erica Shadowsong, is looking for an adventurous group of test players to join a summer campaign!  Testament is a campaign setting that allows players to experience the mythology and cultures from the Biblical time period.  Magic, mystery, combat, fantasy, and multicultural history come together to put the players in the world of the Bible!  Rather than a religious perspective, however, the setting explores all of the cultures and mythologies presented from a literary and historical standpoint, allowing players to have a great variety of character choices to play and experience.

The game will begin and run through August and may continue longer if we decide we want to Times and days will be decided by participant availability.  Players do not need to purchase anything, as they will have pre-made characters to choose from, and we will use Discord or another program to roll dice.  (However, if you have your own polyhedral dice you want to use, you are welcome too!)  This is open to anyone grades 4 - 7th who really wants to do it.  We will need 3 players minimum to run the game and will cap it at 8 participants total.  If you think you may be interested or would like to know more, more information is coming, as well as signup, so watch this space!  However, you can also reach out to me via email, eshadowsong@first-unitarian-pgh.org if you have questions or want to let me know of your interest early.  As long as there are slots available, you have until July 29th to sign up.

Cluster congregations that have adopted the 8th Principle will have a few moments to share their journeys. Time is allocated for reflection and discussion in break-out rooms. BI-POC rooms will be available.

The first UUA-wide vote on adopting the 8th principle will be at 2023's UUA General Assembly in Pittsburgh. Let’s be a collective and informed voice in the conversation at that historic event!

SERVE

EECM Shelter Meals July, August & September

As you know, First Unitarian Church provides the Sunday Night dinner for the EECM Shelter on the first Sunday of every month.  Our next three dinners are:

Sunday, July 4th
Sunday, August 1st
Sunday, September 5th

Suppose you would like to be the coordinator for any of the upcoming months. It seems to work quite well to have a point person organize the menu and contributions and contact EECM.
Second, If you would prefer to contribute by preparing foods, please let me know which months you are available, and I will connect you with the coordinator.
Finally, I understand that we are still preparing meals in our homes and dropping them off at EECM.  I will let you know when this changes.
Finally, if there are any friends, family, neighbors, or colleagues who you think might be interested in helping,  and especially if they are looking for a way to be introduced to our church and one of our service projects, please feel free to invite them to participate.  If you share their names with me, I will reach out to them and explain more about our Sunday Night Shelter Dinner Program.

Again, thank you for all your help.
Any questions, contact Sam R Hens-Greco

Upcoming Worship Services

June 20, 2021

Livestreamed at 10:30 am (prelude begins at 10:25)

“The Light Within Us”

On the longest day of the year, we celebrate the presence of the sun, that keeps us alive.  Similarly, we celebrate the divine light within ourselves that guides us, comforts us, and keeps us engaged with life, during the high and low times.  Like the earth, we will draw on the sun's light to fill us, so that we may draw on it as it goes further away in the colder months.

Homily by Erica Shadowsong, Director of Lifespan Religious Education. Liturgist Alice Carnes. Music by Ellen Gozion, Director of Instrumental Music. The Dance Choir joins us by video.
