Lightning Strike Damages St. Philip’s, Charleston

St. Philip's Church by Samuel HunterThe steeple bells of St. Philip’s, Charleston, were damaged beyond repair from a lightning strike Saturday, June 13. In addition, three of the four video cameras used for streaming, parts of the air conditioning units, electronic equipment and phones were destroyed.

From their newsletter: "The National Weather Service reported five lightning strikes on the Peninsula Saturday night, and one such strike reportedly landed near the corner of Church and Market Streets. More than likely, since the location may be approximate, “near the corner” may just be the tallest landing spot in the area: the St. Philip’s steeple..."

The Life-Changing Outdoor Encounters

"The lessons I learned transformed my day-to-day life and I liked the change."
The outdoors is a sweaty, buggy place, especially if you live in Charleston, South Carolina. Yet, the outdoors can be a sacred ground for encountering God, connecting with others and experiencing personal growth.

Growing up, I was very shy and timid. I wouldn’t leave my parents’ side around strangers. I was terrified of public speaking, to the point where in elementary school I was shaking the whole way through my first 10-minute presentation. Near the end of high school, I began to relax a bit more and find more confidence in myself and the world around me, but it wasn’t until I got involved in Outdoor Education that my life really began to change.

St. David's Day School Celebrates 50th Anniversary

In honor of St. David’s Day School’s 50th year of service in Cheraw, on June 4, 2021 the church and the day school came together in celebration.  Their outdoor event consisted of live music, a petting zoo, Monica’s Italian Ice truck and a picnic of hotdogs and popcorn.   Lou Hendley directed the children as they performed several musical numbers, as she has for some many years at the school.

Founded in 1970 by several mothers in the parish, St. David’s School and Day Care operates as a community outreach ministry of St David’s Anglican Church.  Throughout the years, the school has prospered and grown, nurturing generations of children in their community.   In 1975 Lou Hendley joined the staff and has continued to serve as musical director to date.  Director, Renee Rowe continues to do an awesome job leading teachers and staff and connecting with parents and children.  The church, under the leadership of the Rev. Mary Ellen Doran, is blessed by this wonderful ministry to our community.  We pray God’s blessings on the school, the teachers and staff, the parents and children for another 50 years (and more!).

People News

The Rev. Eddie DriggersPlease keep the Rev. Eddie Driggers, who serves as a deacon at Church of the Resurrection, North Charleston, in your prayers. Recently a scan revealed cancer in his bones. He began chemotherapy on June 3. In a note to the congregation he wrote, “Through prayer God gives me the authority to go into the day looking forward to tomorrow and not looking back on yesterday. God has gifted me with his armor and your prayer will strengthen it immeasurably.”  Read the full note.

The Rev. Jeff JacobsThe Rev. Jeff Jacobs, who serves as a priest at St. Paul's Church, Summerville, has been invited by Archbishop Samy Fawzy to be a priest in the Diocese of North Africa beginning in September 2022. Jeff and his wife, Kristen, had earlier been accepted as candidates to serve in that Diocese with SAMS.  In a note to St. Paul's, Jeff wrote, "We are so blessed to be partnering with SAMS, a sending society that helps people like you partner with God’s work overseas. We have three main goals in view: 1. We will be working indefinitely with the Anglican Province of Alexandria as a priest in a church: leading services in both English and (eventually) Arabic. 2. We hope to plant new churches for locals and expatriates alike. 3. We hope to provide basic needs, pastoral support, and discipleship for the thousands of refugees who have fled to North Africa many of whom are from Christian homes." Learn more

The Rev. Jim WorkmanPlease keep the family and loved ones of the Rev. James Kelly Workman, who is a former Pastoral Associate at Christ Church, Mt. Pleasant, in your prayers. Jim died on June 12, following a traffic accident in Mt. Pleasant. After graduating from Covenant College on Lookout Mountain Georgia, and Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, he served God and His people as a pastor of churches in Florida, Virginia, Arizona, South Carolina, and was the founding pastor of Peace Presbyterian Church in Cary, North Carolina. Jim studied the Bible and taught from his philosophical heart that sought God's answers for life's questions and wonders. Jim was known to many through his sincere joy in life, and his fun nature and affection for others yielded too many friendships to number. A service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday June 26th, 2021 at 11:00 AM, at Christ Church Anglican Church in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Read more.
