While many people consider July to be the start of summer, our Summer Abroad programs are well underway. As of last week, we have concluded the first three virtual programs: South Africa, Global China, and South Korea. Check out our Instagram to see what students have shared as they documented their experiences. This month, four exciting virtual programs begin! We are looking forward to the start of the Spain and Beijing & Tianjin programs in early July as well as the Ecuador and England programs at the end of the month. Keep reading to learn more about what Summer Abroad participants can expect this month!

Program Spotlight

One of our upcoming virtual Summer Abroad programs takes our students to South America, for the course Introduction to Ecuador (ENV382H), co-taught by Professors Barbara Murck and Christoph Richter

The course is newly designed for the virtual format. The in-person Ecuador program normally takes students through the rigours of the Andes, immerses them in the Amazon rainforest, and has them exploring the waters and islands of the Galápagos.

The virtual format required a re-design of the course, one that could engage students with the country and its people, without the “hands-on”, immersive experience that was such a big part of the in-person program. The professors’ vision was to provide a background on Ecuador as a country, focusing on the geography and geology, ecology, history, culture and economy, as well as its social and political evolution and current issues. READ MORE >

Focus on the Summer Abroad Community

Before the virtual Beijing & Tianjin program begins on July 11th, we connected with Professor Weiguo Zhang and Professor A. Ka Tat Tsang to find out their favourite parts of the course and how they've adapted it to include interactive ways for students to virtually experience the course material. READ MORE >
In this interview we chat with Rebecca, who participated in Summer Abroad in Spain in 2017 and Portugal in 2019. Rebecca highlights how important her Summer Abroad experiences were in fostering her ability to be independent and how that newfound sense of independence led her back to Spain.

Summer Abroad 2021 Participants' Year of Study

The Summer Abroad program encourages participation from students in all academic years as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. Bringing students from across all years of study (and some alumni!) together to learn in a small group, allows for students to make friends and learn from peers who they may have not have otherwise had the opportunity to interact with. While the majority of this year's participants are in their 3rd year of study, all stages of the undergraduate academic experience are represented. READ MORE >
