A Note from Ms. Brandee

Finish with Fun

Dear Compass Community,

We only have 8 school days after today!  That's amazing!

Everyone has worked so incredibly hard this year and we are now in full celebration mode!

Our message at Compass has been to "finish with fun".  Check out the collages below from our recent Fun Fridays.

Coming soon for families: an Arts Week Video!  We missed having you at our performance, so Ms. Lori and Ms. Diane are creating a video to share with you.  It will be ready next week!

I've been repeating the mantra "Finish with Fun" because we will start next year with a more "normal" culture if we finish out on a positive note this year.

Kids Say the Darndest Things...

Last night, I was at my son's community baseball game and I heard the coach say, "You guys only have a few days left of school!"

One of 8 year old players (not a Compass kid) responded saying,

"Hooray only a few days left!  School this year has been hell."

Kids say the darndest things... :)

All of the adults in the vicinity looked at one another and raised our eyebrows.  Woah, that's strong language from a kiddo that age...  In my experience, phrases like that one are usually not typically the creation of the kiddo, but instead something that he/she has overheard from an adult.

I truly hope that the quote above doesn't resonate with any of our Compass kiddos.  If for some reason it does, I hope that the adults in that student's world can help reframe the year in a way that will expand his/her mindset.

As I reflect on this year, I come back to one of Ms. Julie's favorite quotes

I think we've all learned a thing or two about bravery, strength, and our smarts this year.

May Winnie the Pooh's words ring loudly around Compass and beyond as we prepare to cross the finish line.  May our students harness these lessons for persevering through adversity as one of the silver linings of the pandemic.

See you at Old Mountain Field at 6:30 tomorrow night!

We've received more than 150 RSVPs for tomorrow's game!

The Read-A-Thon is Tomorrow! :)

Woohoo, tomorrow is Read-A-Thon day!

Be sure to send your kiddo in with some extra books that they're excited to read (of course we have some here at school as well!).

As a reminder, the messaging that I sent out last week with the Read-A-Thon details is below...

Read-A-Thon Purpose

The purpose of the Read-A-Thon is threefold:

  1. To host another special event that we can all look forward to!
  2. To jump start a positive reading culture before summer!
  3. To raise money for our Co-Op (who raises the fun level for our kids)!

Read-A-Thon Plan

Starting on Monday, we're all going to bring great energy about reading and create space both during and after school for kids to read!

Then on Friday, June 11th, we'll host a culminating event at Compass where kids can read all day at school

  • Students can read material from home or material from school.
  • Students can read outside, they can read inside.
  • Students can read silently, they can read to a friend, they can read to a chicken.
  • Students can read sitting down, they can read laying down, they can read walking around.
  • Students can read novels, comic books, magazines, short stories, poetry...
You get it; we just want them to read, read, READ.

The Fundraising Component

The Co-Op has set a goal of raising $2,000 to support all of the things they help us sustain.  Some of those Co-Op funded activities include: after school programs, teacher support, facilities support, classroom supplies, Eco Fair, 8th grade trips, and so much more!

We will engage all students in the positive spirit of reading.  If you would also like your family to help contribute to the fundraising component, here's how you do it!:

  1. Fill out this permission form to give the okay for your kiddo to participate in the fundraising component of the Read-A-Thon.
  2. The Co-Op will create a personalized 99Pledges page for your student to begin collecting pledges for the Read-A-Thon. They will email the details.
  3. Invite your family, friends and neighbors to sponsor your student's Read-A-Thon goals!

Please see the YELLOW Readathon Paper that came home with your student last Wednesday for more details.  It's also linked here pg 1 and pg 2 just in case it was lost in transit, as sometimes happens :)

On the form, the Co-Op set the target of 100 minutes in 5 days (not counting the day where we read all day at school).

Please let our students know that Ms. Brandee challenges them to SOAR above that goal; I know what these guys are capable of!

Happy Friday Eve!

In Partnership,
Ms. Brandee
