SPECIAL NOTICE: Wednesday, July 11 Gullah Geechee: African Communities on the Barrier Islands of the American South - 1:00pm via Zoom - World traveler and photojournalist Barry Pell returns virtually to discuss the Gullah Geechee - descendants of people from Sierra Leone and other neighboring countries of the West African rice coast In this program, accompanied by his photography, he will discuss how they have preserved their African roots, heritage, and culture, while resisting pressures by developers for their valuable and pristine lands. Thursday, June 17 Concord Museum: Harriet - 8:15pm Concord Museum (outdoors), 53 Cambridge Turnpike, Concord - This film on the life of Harriet Tubman expands our understanding of this well-known, and almost mythical, figure and puts her real-life experiences into our minds and hearts.  The path to freedom is dangerous and challenging. Friday, June 18 Parkinson’s Disease: Safety in the Home - 1:00pm via Zoom - Presented by Emerson Hospital - This presentation will focus on how to set up a safe home. Nicole Johnson, PT, DPT will discuss modifications and equipment that can be brought into the home to help people stay independent. Link here to register.
 
Friday, June 18 Parkinson’s Disease: Sleep & Parkinson’s - 2:00pm via Zoom - Presented by Emerson Hospital - Dr. Gary Stanton will discuss sleep challenges that occur in some patients with Parkinson’s, such as insomnia, non-restorative sleep, sleep movement disorders and sleep apnea. Link here to register.
 
Saturday, June 19 Antislavery Walking Tour - 11:00am-12:30pm Concord Museum - 19th century Concord was teeming with activists and intellectuals who cultivated the beginning of the antislavery movement.  Coinciding with the celebration of Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, this tour will introduce the Concord women and men who played a crucial role in the abolitionist movement in the years leading up to the Civil War. Tickets ($15.00 for non-members; $5 for members) include same-day admission to the Concord Museum. Link here to register.

Tuesday, June 22 All That She Carried - 7:00pm via Zoom - Presented by the Concord Museum - MacArthur “Genius” Fellow and Harvard University Professor Tiya Miles discusses her new book, All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake, a story about women, mothers, and daughters, who chose the profundity of love over dehumanizing condition.  At the heart of this moving tale is a rough cotton bag, given by an enslaved woman named Rose to her daughter, Ashley, before their forced separation. Thursday, June 24 Joy of Movement Dance Program - Time and outdoor location TBD - Dance for those who enjoy music and movement, led by Donna Newman-Bluestein, dance therapist. We will welcome the spring and celebrate the warm weather, following current Covid precaution. This event is appropriate for those with memory or mobility challenges and anyone who loves to dance. Wednesday, July 7 - Sunday, July 11 Thoreau Society 80th Annual Meeting Thoreau and Diversity: People, Principles, and Politics - via Zoom - Presented by the Thoreau Society - Thirty-five live hours of events over multiple days.
