Dear <<First Name>>,

Since forming government, New Democrats have worked relentlessly to tackle the affordability crisis. For too long, people have suffered from the years of neglect by the previous BC Liberal government. People in our province continue to struggle to find affordable homes. We are making progress, but there is more to do.

I'm so excited to share that we recently took another huge step in the right direction. Our government announced that more than 2,400 new affordable rental homes will be built for people with moderate and low incomes throughout the province.

We also know that Indigenous peoples face unique housing barriers. That’s why more than 1,000 of these new homes will be for Indigenous individuals, families and Elders. These projects will be Indigenous-led to ensure they meet the unique needs of each community. Prioritizing these solutions for communities is part of our commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.

These new units are some of the nearly 30,000 affordable homes now complete or underway in every corner of the province, building on the significant momentum as we continue to address the housing crisis. There’s much more to do, but we’re committed to doing the work to make life better and more affordable for all British Columbians. For more information, please visit workingforyou.gov.bc.ca.

Families benefiting from B.C.’s fastest creation of child care spaces

More families than ever are benefiting from better access to quality, affordable child care, thanks to the fastest creation of child care spaces in B.C.'s history.

The Province has exceeded its original three-year goal and has funded nearly 26,000 new licensed child care spaces since the 10-year Childcare BC plan was launched in 2018. Nearly 70% of these spaces are expected to be open for families within the next year.

In addition to creating more licensed spaces, the Province is making new investments to provide $10-a-day child care for twice as many families and to double the wage enhancement to $4 an hour for more than 11,000 early childhood educators. At the same time, tens of thousands of families are saving up to $1,600 a month per child through the government's affordability measures.

More funding to support sexual assault survivors

The Ending Violence Association of BC (EVA BC) is receiving an additional $10 million to assist more community-based sexual assault response service programs throughout the Province.

Sexual assault and other forms of gender-based violence have devastating impacts on survivors, and that's why government is committed to prioritizing services and supports for those impacted.

In March 2020, government provided EVA BC with $10 million to establish and administer a multi-year Emergency Sexual Assault Services grant program to support the delivery of co-ordinated, community-based emergency sexual assault response services in regions throughout B.C. This meant 23 organizations throughout the province received funding to support the delivery of trauma-informed and culturally appropriate response services for survivors of sexual assault.

In recognition of the substantial need for locally relevant and culturally safe supports for survivors in Indigenous communities in B.C., approximately half of the grant funding was allocated to an Indigenous services stream led by Indigenous leaders. The other half was allocated to a general services stream.

This additional $10 million will double the support and allow EVA BC to provide funding to additional programs from among a pool of already adjudicated, strong applications that were not funded under the grant program when it first launched.
