• Through the help of The Ulster Scots & Scots Irish Genealogy Facebook Group, Co-founder Celia has added the 1630 Muster Roll of the Province of Ulster to the Sources webpage on the AmeriCeltic website. This 17th century tomb consists of images of that documents 283 folio sheets, listing 13,147 adult males, from the nine counties of Ulster, in the year 1630, and is a treasure of genealogical information, as these men likely have hundreds of millions of descendents here in America and elsewhere.
• With COVID restrictions ending, online Zoom host Michael Eskin offers us an update on his popular Thursday Irish session, The Ould Sod Virtual Irish Session. (See Below)
• This coming Saturday, June 12th, from 3:00 - 4:00 PM at Historic Ark Row shopping district in Tiburon, CA, the Saint Andrew's Society of San Francisco will be co-sponsoring the Prince Charles Pipe Band performing in the open-air MidSummer's Eve Celebration. The Ould Sod Virtual Session
Every Thursday
5:30 - 7:30 PM Pacific

Meeting ID: 619 368 1854
Password: session

When COVID restrictions began in March, 2020, many weekly gatherings shifted to meeting online via the Zoom platform.

With restrictions in California lifting beginning next Tuesday, June 15th, some are reducing or ending their Zoom meetings, but Michael Eskin says his, The Ould Sod Virtual Session, will continue, and since he has hosted 61 of these musical meetings so far, I believe him!

Michael Eskin says:
With other Zoom sessions either closing down or changing to once-a-month format, and in-real-life sessions restarting, I wanted to remind everyone that it is my intention to continue to host a Thursday 'The Ould Sod Virtual Session' on Zoom for as long as there is demand for it. As long as I can get 9 or 10 players each week, I'll continue hosting it.

We've generally been between 20 and 30 players each week, but last week we dropped considerably, I think because of other online events going on that night, like the Thursday Tune Supply livestreams on YouTube. However, the last of those will be next Thursday, June 17th, and then they will take a hiatus for the rest of this summer while we intend to continue our weekly meetings.

Please let others know about our weekly event!

Folklife Newsletter & Folklife West Magazine

Available quarterly by emailed PDF

One very new and positive development during these past 15 months of pandemic restrictions has been the explosion of Zoom meetings, and the resulting mutual accessibility between like minded Culture afficianados from around our entire planet.

One of these is the husband and wife team of Sam and Eleanor Simmons, who we met through their regular participation in several Zoom meeting singing sessions we began frequenting. We soon learned that these two are also the key couple in the Folklife organization of the United Kingdom (UK).

Folklife is a very non-profit group of volunteers who chronical and publicize Folk culture around the UK. Three times a year, Folklife publishes a print and online magazine, Folklife West, ('West' is Wales and western England). Folklife also publishes their free emailed Folklife Newsletter.

Sam Simmons says:
FW (Folklife West) is normally 60+ pages A4 size (roughly US letter size) Folklife Website
FW is printed Jan, May, Sept, and all copied online. Plus we add online updates.
• You can View print pages online as webpages - view as images, and you can download free PDFs
• You can receive the Free emailed 'Folklife Newsletter' (updates). To join that mailing list, send us an email with Subject "Opt In" plus your country (for England only: region) to sam@folklife.uk
• You can View an online version of Newsletter on www.folklife.uk/updates.html
FW also includes articles, on www.folklife-traditions.uk!

We encourage all our readers to have a look at the huge array of English and Welsh music and culture offered by Folklife.

Mary Ann McCracken (1770-1866) was born and lived in Belfast. In life and in the recorded history that followed, she was often overshadowed by her brother, executed United Irishman Henry Joy McCracken. However recently her name and her achievements are becoming more widely known. Mary Ann was an abolitionist, social reformer and activist who fought for the rights of women and championed the disadvantaged at both home and abroad. She lived a long life that encompassed the most turbulent years of Irish history. Her radical, humanitarian zeal and generous strength of character were indefatigable, and her contribution to Belfast life is still felt and celebrated today.

The McCarthy Family

Whelan Master Sessions
with The McCarthy Family

Saturday, June 12th, 2:00 PM

Online via Zoom

Since March 2020, John has stepped up his online activities, and his latest project is Master Sessions with John Whelan. This edition of Whelan Master Sessions features The McCarthy Family.

John says:
Join us for an exciting round of Irish Music with The McCarthy Family! Jacqueline (concertina), Marion (uilleann pipes and whistle), Bernadette (fiddle and piano) and Tommy Jun. (fiddle) were born in London to Irish parents who had emigrated to England from the west of Ireland in the early 1950s. Their father Tommy was a piper and concertina player from Kilmihil Co. Clare so it was inevitable that they grew up listening to traditional music and played with all the legendary players from Ireland who were living in London. Musicians like Máirtín Byrnes, Raymond Roland, Roger Sherlock, Danny Meehan, Paddy Taylor and Bobby Casey were all part of a thriving music scene that they experienced first hand. They also recall meeting John Kelly and Willie Clancy during frequent visits to Ireland.

With their father Tommy they performed as a family group throughout Ireland and the U.K. - including The Royal Albert Hall, London. The three girls now live in the west of Ireland where they are involved in playing and teaching traditional music on a regular basis and at annual events such as the Willie Clancy Summer School in Co. Clare. Tommy Jun. owns a number of bars in the Boston area which have become popular venues for traditional music. The music they play is in the west Clare style which they inherited from their father Tommy who died in 2000. They can be heard on Jacqueline’s solo album “The Hidden Note” (1999) and on “The Family Album” (2002) which features them in solo, duet and group performances. Geoff Wallis of Irish Music Magazine described it as “one of the best releases of Irish traditional music in the last ten years” and “possibly the best Irish traditional album of 2002”.

In 2008 the McCarthys were featured in a documentary film "Handing Down the Tunes" which covers the life of their father, from his early days, to his years spent in London and his return to live once again in Clare. Many of Tommy's contemporaries, such as Joe Burke, Noel Hill and Reg Hall also contribute to the film.

Here is the McCarthy Family playing a reel, Sporting Nell, at the 2012 Willie Clancy Memorial Concert, Miltown Malbay, County Clare, Ireland. https://youtu.be/P0RQnS0P7UQ

Go to www.johnwhelanmusic.com/master-sessions for details on how to get your Zoom link.

On Wednesdays, John also offers a free one-hour tune teach from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM followed by John's 'Taking Time' slow session at 4:00 PM Pacific - Check them out here: http://johnwhelanmusic.com/slow-session. John sends out a tune list and Zoom link for them on Wednesday mornings. Email John at whelanbx1@me.com to get on the list or for more details.

Seven-time All-Ireland Button Accordion Champion John Whelan is one of the world's best living Irish button accordion players. John was raised in the vibrant London Irish music scene of the 1970s, and learned his craft from such legends as Lucy Farr, Roger Sherlock, Paddy Taylor, Mick O Connor and his teacher Brendan Mulkaire. Along with his All-Ireland Championships, he was twice awarded musician of the year from the Irish Music Association. He has over 15 CDs and has performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. John's music has been featured on such TV shows as 'Sex in the City,' 'History's Mysteries' and 'History Detective.' John performs with the John Whelan Band and has also teamed up with his old pal Brian Conway forming the group Gailfean, which also features Máirtin De Cógáin and Don Penzien have released their first new CD. For over a decade, John has performed 'Monday's with John' every Monday evening on his Facebook Profile.

Plough
Playing for the Plough Videos
Over this past few months, Autumn Rhodes has organized a phenomenal international project, Playing for The Plough and Stars to support that cherished Celtic cultural institution, and now you can enjoy the dozens of resulting videos

The Plough and Stars has Re-Opened

Soft Opening Hours: Wednesday — Sunday 4 to 12 PM

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, 116 Clement Street at 2nd Avenue, San Francisco, CA

Sean Heaney says:
We have opened as of Friday, May 14th. It is a kind of 'soft' opening. We shall see how it goes. Seating is limited to 25% indoors but we have added additional seating out front. Drop by for a pint!

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, is known around the world for hosting incredible Irish music and pulling beautiful pints of Guinness since 1975. Since then, it has evolved to host live music every night of the week, except Monday, including all genres of music; Bluegrass, Country, Rock, Zydeco, acoustic Americana, and of course, Irish Traditional.

Over the years The Plough and the Stars in San Francisco has hosted many well-known musicians from Ireland and around the globe, but the current pandemic and related public health restrictions have put a stop to all that for over a year now. The resulting business losses threaten to put The Plough out of business permanently, but there has been a sustained community crowdfunding effort that gives hope to resist and keep this iconic Celtic business going, if the community can sustain this support long enough.

For now, there is no music, but Autumn Rhodes has organized a series of new videos from many of these musical alumni to help keep the Plough going. Just click on the links to the right, and then please show your support with a contribution here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/sfplough

Starry Session

Starry Session Online

First Sunday of each month, from 8:00 to 10:00 PM

Online via YouTube for The Starry Plough, 3101 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA

The pandemic shut down the well loved Starry Plough in Berkeley a year ago, halting the Sunday night Irish session and Monday night Irish dancing that had been hosted there for decades.

A small group of Plough regulars are convening electronically, and have begun a monthly open session online, on the first Sunday of the month, running for two hours and starting at 8:00 PM. It kicked off on Easter Sunday, as that holiday has always been a time for new beginnings--particularly in Ireland.

The online Starry Session is live-streamed on YouTube allowing other people listen, play, sing or dance along. It works like this: individuals among a pre-selected group of musicians will be called upon to lead a dance tune or song in rotation. Everyone else is on mute; they can follow the music at home with their own instruments or voices or whatever. It's not as magical as being able to hear each other, but it can still be surprisingly therapeutic.

You can tune in on THIS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMR8XRkX_HX9NdL7bRKCp-g

Other ringleaders of this effort are Don Clark, Sean Wahl, Michele Delattre and Shay Black, so you might see communications from any of them as this process goes forward.

DukeofEdinburgh
Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant
Across from Apple Park

The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant

Open 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM every day of the year

10801 N. Wolfe Road, Cupertino, CA

Many of you have heard the rumors about the The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant.

When this pandemic is over, 'The Duke'! will be moving to new quarters just across the parking lot from our current location!
For details, Watch the official Video!

The Duke is, and will remain, THE only Authentic, (and we do mean AUTHENTIC!), British Pub in the Bay Area, located across the street from Apple Headquarters on Wolfe Road in Cupertino.

The atmosphere at the 'The Duke', is the same as you would find in any pub in the British Isles, full of friendly patrons who come in to socialize, play darts, have a pint or two, and eat a meal. If you are looking for a comfortable elegance, pints of beer and authentic food, in an authentic English Pub, there is no a better choice in the Bay Area. The Duke offers a large number of beers on draft and by the bottle. Almost anything English, Scottish or Irish is available. Murphy's Irish Stout brewed in Cork, Ireland and Scotch Eggs is always a good choice.

The servers are excellent and very knowledgeable about the beer and food menu. The menu is expansive and worth exploring. The dark pubsy feel with old regulars in their respective, but not crowded corners around lunch hour in Cupertino, is a great boon.

You can't find more 'authentic' atmosphere, because the entire building was built in jolly old England, then disassembled, shipped and reassembled on site in Cupertino. With the red velvet seating and wall paper and ornate, dim lighting, you are transported to London as soon as you enter the etched glass door.

More info. on The Duke Facebook Page, website www.theduke.com or call 408-446-3853.
