LVCC expansion inaugurated

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) debuted the Las Vegas Convention Center's (LVCC) $1 billion, 1.4 million square foot West Hall expansion with a ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by doors opening to Informa Market's World of Concrete, the first major convention to return to Las Vegas and to the U.S. post-pandemic. The Las Vegas Convention Center Loop, the underground tunnel developed by Elon Musk's The Boring Company designed to shuttle convention attendees throughout the 200-acre campus in all-electric Tesla vehicles, also became fully operational. The arrival of World of Concrete signals the return of meetings and conventions to Las Vegas. The addition of the West Hall brings the total square feet of meeting space in the destination to 14 million and makes the LVCC the 2nd largest facility in the country. "We are excited to welcome our convention customers back to Las Vegas and to our new West Hall, reigniting the meetings and convention industry," said Steve Hill, LVCVA president and CEO.
The West Hall features a contemporary design with 600,000 square feet of exhibition space, including 328,000 square feet of column-free space, the largest column-free exhibition space in North America. An open-air atrium features a 10,000-square-foot digital screen developed by Samsung, the largest digital experience in a convention centre in the U.S. A 14,000-square-foot terrace can hold receptions of up to 2,000 attendees, offering spectacular views of the Las Vegas Strip. Construction on the facility began in September 2018 and continued throughout the pandemic. (kf)

Double power in North America

MAD Event Management LLC has entered a partnership with Messe Düsseldorf North America (MDNA) to launch and incubate events in Detroit, Michigan. The two groups have complementary operating entities that will support the vision of a launchpad of events under the guidance and with the support of Claude Molinari, president and CEO Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau. "The credit for the concept lies in a multi-year development plan between MAD and Claude Molinari, whose vision of Detroit as a city well positioned to capitalise on the future of live events in North America is unwavering. Detroit is keen to focus its resources to launch business-to-business and business-to-consumer events," said Martha Donato, founder and president, MAD Event Management. "We all believe that sustainable commerce in trade shows, conferences and consumer events in Detroit will contribute to the city's long-running Renaissance story and we are excited to be part of it. Once we get a better handle on protocols in a post-Covid world, we will announce our dates and initial conference and show schedule," said Tom Mitchell, president, Messe Düsseldorf North America." New format in Nuremberg

The hunting season has started: NürnbergMesse is to launch Wildlife.fair from April 9 to 12, 2022, a new event for nature and hunting enthusiasts. The Bavarian Hunting Association is the promotional supporter of the fair and organiser of the conference accompanying Wildlife.fair. The public show will be held in the Messezentrum Nürnberg. For NürnbergMesse CEO Peter Ottmann, the show "will bring together the passion and enthusiasm of a consumer show and the extensive expertise and industry knowledge represented by IWA Outdoor Classics." The exhibition duo will expand to a trio with the Hubana Jagderlebnistage (Hunting Experience Days) at Schloss Lembeck. Wildlife.fair is intended to combine experience, shopping and information – and to make new products accessible to a wider public for the first time one month after IWA Outdoor Classics, according to trade fair director Anna-Catharina Heller. The cross-border conference will cover the topics wildlife, environment and nature and create a dialog platform for all stakeholders. (ch)

UFI European Conference: Ways to adapt to the new realities

Exhibition organisers must adapt to the new reality in the digital event space. The UFI European Conference delivered several perspectives how this can happen and put a spotlight on European excellence and thought leadership in the global context. Philippe Brocart, from Maison & Objet, shared experiences from six years of running a digital marketplace alongside a face-to-face show. “We are not selling square metres; we are offering business opportunities on the platform,” he says. Olivier Ferraton, CEO of GL events, focused on lessons learned from organising and servicing sports events. “Hybrid solutions are a part of life; they are nothing to be scared about,” he says. Taking place over two afternoons and led by Nick Dugdale-Moore, UFI’s Regional Director for Europe, the 2021 UFI European Conference offered participants a blend of keynote sessions and expert content, as well as networking, matchmaking and business development opportunities. UFI’s Dugdale-Moore says: “Of course, we would have preferred to meet in person, but this year’s digital conference offered positive outcomes in terms of lessons learned and a view to what’s coming next. On behalf of the UFI team, I want to thank the speakers and panellists for delivering such compelling and valuable content. UFI members can catch up on all the sessions in the member section of the website, once the event platform closes. I am already looking forward to the next European Conference which will take place in Poznan, Poland in May 2022, hosted by our friends at Grupa MTP.” (kf)

Digitisation in the Live Marketing + Exhibition Industry

Under the title "Digitisation in the Live Marketing + Exhibition Industry - Opportunities + Challenges," IFES, the International Federation of Exhibition and Event Services has published a whitepaper on the occasion of Best of Events Connect, the online offshoot of the BoE industry trade show, that focuses on the changing use of digital formats in the context of physical events. In the paper, which is aimed primarily at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the association uses the "customer journey" to describe strengths and weaknesses as well as opportunities and risks of digital and hybrid trade show and event formats. As a decision-making aid for communication managers in companies, the paper uses the customer journey to describe the changes at touchpoints between customer and product/service. The SWOT analysis that follows gives readers the opportunity to compare their own situation with the possibilities of the changed communication measures. In this way, they succeed in making the right decision for their company when they use both digital and physical measures. "It was important to us that we provide as comprehensive a basis for decision-making as possible for our members' customers within the scope of the paper," says IFES Association managing director Uta Goretzky. "In doing so, we also wanted to dispel the misconception that the acceleration of digital communication makes face2face communication obsolete or that digital communication channels are fundamentally cost-effective and lead to a better ROI.
