Changes for the Awake Newsletter

Hello friends!

As things begin to settle down after a very busy April and May, Awake is starting to think ahead to our plans and priorities for the next six months. We have so much we want to do, but limited time and resources to do it! (Speaking of -  if you want to lend a hand as a volunteer, please let me know! We could certainly use your help!)

We also recognize that YOU, dear readers, are pretty busy yourselves, and as much as you support this mission, you may not have time to read this whole newsletter every week. We want to keep communicating, while also respecting your time and your inboxes, so we are going to start sending the Awake newsletter every other week moving forward.

You may occasionally hear from us with more targeted emails during the in-between weeks (a specific invitation, a request for help, a timely news update), but this longer newsletter will now be sent biweekly. We hope this allows you to both stay informed and stay balanced.

Of course, if you want to hear from Awake more frequently, make sure you're following us on social media for daily posts and updates:

With this change, there will be no newsletter next week (although we may have one quick request to share), but I trust that we remain united in friendship and mission until we connect again.

With gratitude for your continued support,

Sara Larson
Executive Director
Awake Milwaukee

We're cleaning up our growing email database, and we want to make sure we have the most accurate information for you. Could you take one minute to let us know if we have your location, interests, and other details correct? Thank you!

Blog Post -  Exploring the Impact of Clergy Abuse on Black Communities

This week on the Awake Blog we report on an important panel discussion, hosted by Fordham University, about the impact of the clergy abuse crisis on the Black community.

"Another panelist, Fr. Bryan Massingale, a priest of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and professor of theological and social ethics at Fordham, also shared the personal experience he had as a student at a predominantly black Catholic school in the 1960s and 1970s where he was also an altar boy. When he served funerals with one particular priest, he noticed that the nuns would always accompany the altar boys to the sacristy, never leaving them alone with the priest. Many decades later, 'when the archdiocese published the list of priests who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse and I saw this priest’s name, it dawned on me that the sisters knew or suspected and were doing what they could to protect us,' Massingale said. 'If not for the efforts of those sisters, I could have been one of that man’s victims.'"

From our Meet Awake series:

"I got involved with Awake because my mom is a victim of clerical sexual assault. So the work is very personal to me. Funny story -- I was praying to God in 2019 thanking him for my new job at Gesu; I was happy, 'BUT,' I prayed, 'I'd still like to work on the crisis in our Church.' Not five minutes later did I get an email forwarded from a friend advertising Awake's Community Gathering. I went to it, and I'm so glad I did. God does hear our prayers!"

Please Join Us In Prayer

This week, we invite you to pray for our Board of Directors, who are making some important decisions for the future of our organization. Will you please lift up Elizabeth, Jerri, Deirdre, Jim, Shelly, and Elaine, and ask for God's wisdom and prudence to lead and guide them? Thank you!
