Did you know that blowholes on Whales and dolphins are a convergent evolutionary trait? Rachel Roston, (@RachelRoston) sure does! She presented her work tracking embryonic cetacean blowhole morphogenesis at the annual Experimental Biology Meeting, and it was chosen as a news feature here!
Suzzallo Library is an icon at UW, and its nearby foliage is undergoing a change. Le Zhen from the Department of Bioengineering is cultivating a new juniper bonsai tree in front of the library. This new fixture will both enhance the natural beauty of this area, and is also meant to show that UW supports the asian, asian american, and pacific islander communities. There are 2 Postdoctoral Scholar Training Specialist positions available under the Empowering Prevention and Inclusive Communities (EPIC) program. The Training Specialist is a 20% FTE position and current UW postdoc applicants are preferred. The Training Specialist will facilitate trainings and support the wellbeing and safety of the University of Washington community. The training program includes information regarding sexual harassment, discrimination, intersectional power dynamics, bystander intervention strategies, response options, UW policies and procedures, and union rights.
The Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) is open to applications for the extramural postdoctoral seminar series “INCEPT: Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Colloquia of Extramural Postdoc Talks”. Speakers will share their research with the HMS community, receive valuable feedback, and directly interact with fellow postdocs and faculty members. Apply here.

Interested in Clinical Research? The Institute for Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) is excited to host July workshops designed as an introduction for faculty, staff, and post-doctoral fellows to learn all that is involved in designing and managing a clinical trial. Registration opens June 16th.
Want other scientists to cite you? Drop the jargon. If you want your work to be highly cited: Steer clear of discipline-specific jargon in the title and abstract. There's even a computer script that calculates a jargon score for your work.

Funding and Job Opportunities
Washington Research Foundation (WRF) is seeking Venture Analysts to assist with reviewing potential grants and investments. Venture Analysts will work up to 10hrs/wk performing background research on grant-making and investment opportunities currently under consideration by WRF. Analysts will gain a greater understanding of the process of commercialization as they work for a locally focused foundation and venture capital firm.
WRF - Postdoc fellowship This fellowship provides 3 years of support for postdocs in STEM fields who received their PhD on or after July 1st 2020. Zoom info session June 8th. Application deadline is the end of the day on June 27, 2021
Have experiences to write about? How about submitting your story for a Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists? If you were awarded a PhD between 1/1/2019 and 12/31/2020, you are invited to submit a 1000-word essay about your graduate student research (in one of four eligible subject tracks) by July 15, 2021. The Grand Prize is $30,000 USD and the three other category winners are awarded $10,000 each. The grand prize-winning essay will be published in Science and essays from the three category winners will be published online. Winners will be invited to Sweden in December 2021 to participate in a unique week filled with events in honor of science. More information and the Entry Form are here.
Science and Technology Policy Fellowship, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO): Apply by June 15, 2021. Post Doctorate RA - Quantitative Proteomics, Cancer Biomarkers, and Other Applications of Proteomics – The research areas include the development of quantitative methodologies for precise protein and posttranslational modification measurements, and corresponding large-scale applications in biofluids, cell, or tissue specimens towards clinical and translational research in cancer. The preferred candidate would have a Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry, clinical chemistry, or closely related fields. The Integrative Omics group also presents a diverse array of opportunities ranging from analytical biochemistry, MS instrumentation, multi-omics measurements, single cell proteomics, bioinformatics, and biomedical applications
Integrated Science Lab Director at W.M. Keck Science Department of Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges. This position is responsible for the preparation, design, and teaching of the laboratory curriculum for the department’s integrated Introductory Biology-Chemistry course. Responsibilities also include updating laboratory curricula to match best practices in science education, developing lab projects that engage with partners in the broader community, and assessing the educational effectiveness of the Integrated Science curriculum

Union Update
From the Postdoc Task Force on Applying for PI Status: As a postdoc, having the opportunity to apply for grants and run projects as a principal investigator is an important opportunity for professional development. Article 12.6 of our union’s contract gave us access to apply and act as PIs and co-PIs. The union is starting a task force to understand the approval process across different Departments and Colleges for gaining PI status on grants in hope of making this process more transparent and equitable for all postdocs on campus. Email postdoc.pi@uaw4121.org to join the task force or to receive more information – representation from postdocs from a broad range of departments, covering all UW Colleges, is important.
