Self-Preservation as an End of Life Caregiver
Caring for critically ill and dying people day in and day out can lead to rapid burnout. How can we honor the people we care for when a "dignified death" feels at times impossible? How can we honor ourselves through self-preservation strategies? How much of a boundary needs to exist within empathy? This workshop is designed to explore coping mechanisms, share experiences, and participate in healing creative expression.

Through both group conversation and personal writing activities, we will recall personal stories, identify moments of difficulty/burnout, and highlight the ways in which we can support ourselves and each other in the honorable position of caring for someone transitioning through the end of their life. Primary learning objectives will center around community support, validating experiences and identifying coping strategies. Ideally, the outcome will be a greater understanding of our limitations and needs as caregivers, and the creation of a “toolbox” that can be utilized for future patient care experiences.

Facilitator Nina Solis is a hematology-oncology and Covid-19 RN and emerging writer based in Philadelphia. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2018 as a first-generation college student, with a major in Nursing and minor in Creative Writing. Currently she enjoys playing guitar, running, and genuine human connection (at least 6-feet apart). You can find her @bean_solis on Twitter and Instagram.

In this workshop participants will be asked to read, write, and discuss. If you require an accommodation, please contact NWNMC at nwnmc.pdx@gmail.com

Sharing Countless Ways the COVID-19 Pandemic Has Impacted Our Lives

We’ve partnered with the RELATE Lab to document and share stories of the countless ways that COVID-19 has impacted our lives. We want to listen, absorb, and be moved to action by narratives of illness and wellness – the good, the bad, and the unexpected. We want to use these stories to help co-create a better healthcare system that places greater value on connection, relationships, and wellness.

There are several ways to be involved with Together Well. Please join us!

Submit your existing writing about COVID-19If you’re in the greater Northwest region and have written about how your health and wellness have been interrupted or impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, we’d love to read your work. It can take any form, be any length, and be in any stage of development. If it's your authentic story, we want to read it.

Read TogetherWell. From poetic explorations and expression to reflections on how the present pandemic connects to our past and our futures--read the stories that've been created in our community of practice and generously shared by other NWNMC members.

Support your fellow writersWe’re looking for a small group of individuals to help NWNMC spearhead a supportive revision process for stories submitted to the Together Well project. If you have wanted to get more involved in NWNMC, now is a great time. We are particularly interested in finding people with editing and coaching skills. If you are available to help us explore and navigate this process as part of the Together Well team, please let us know! Contact us and put “Together Well” in the subject line.

Create new work about COVID-19We’ll be hosting writing workshops periodically that focus on stories from the COVID-19 pandemic. There you can continue work on writing-in-progress OR start from scratch with new prompts and ideas. At the end of the workshop you will have a first draft of something to share with the Together Well team. This session will look similar to our typical Community of Practice sessions with more dedicated time to write and give/get feedback. Check out our Community of Practice pages to register for upcoming workshops.
