Project Update

Strategies, tools, and partnerships for more inclusive cities worldwide.

Inclusive Workplace of the Future
G3ict and Steelcase are partnering to convene global experts and create a Blueprint for Inclusive Workplaces of the Future. This work will challenge the current state of practice and create a vision for the future. The Blueprint will provide key stakeholders with valuable insights for designing and implementing workplaces that are not only safe and compelling, but also inclusive across different dimensions of diversity with a focus on persons with disabilities.
To achieve this objective, G3ict and Steelcase engage global leaders from multiple domains, e.g. human resource professionals, architecture and design firms, technologists, disabled persons organizations, private sector employers, property managers, policy makers, and others. Each group brings perspective on how to achieve safe, compelling, and inclusive workplaces of the future across diverse cultural contexts.
As part of this initiative, these experts participate in facilitated co-design sessions to map the most important concepts, stakeholder needs, and key actions that will result in workplaces of the future that are more inclusive of persons with disabilities. Together, these experts consider how diversity and design can converge to inform the evolution of hybrid workplaces.
The first expert roundtable to discuss the concepts related to safe, compelling, and inclusive workplaces in post-pandemic world was held on May 25. Experts from AT&T, Bank of America, Business Disability Forum (UK), G3ict, Government of Canada, The Keri Gray Group, Microsoft, NBBJ,
Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT), The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Steelcase and World Enabled shared their experience, including personal stories, as well as their perspectives on what workplace of the future should look like to meet the requirements of safety, attractiveness, and inclusiveness.

Smart Ability Summit 2021 | Innovations and Partnerships for More Accessible Cities
Transportation and mobility play a critical role in supporting our rights, opportunities, and socio-economic outcomes, including access to education, employment, health services, housing, community involvement, public safety, and justice. However, too often, transportation and mobility in urban environments create barriers to access. The session on Innovations and Partnerships for More Accessible Cities at Microsoft’s Smart Ability Summit 2021 saw speakers Wendy Chisholm (Microsoft), Jarnail Chudge (Microsoft), Marie Trudelle (LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired), and James Thurston talked about how data, partnerships, and communities are changing the ways people and cities use technology to increase confidence in navigation, increase knowledge about the immediate environment, and increase access to sidewalks and pathways. Watch the complete panel discussion on YouTube.

IAAP and Smart Cities

Explore the latest by IAAP to help professionals around the world build inclusive smart cities.

Certified Professional in Accessible Built Environments (CPABE) Credential
CPABE is now a credential within the IAAP portfolio of offerings.  While not a prerequisite, CPABE builds on IAAP’s foundational certification - ‘Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies’ (CPACC) - and identifies successful applicants as associate, advanced, or expert level accessibility professionals. Learn more about the CPABE Credential.

The AODA Accessibility Standard for the Design of Public Spaces
The Design of Public Spaces online course was originally created to provide instruction to professionals working in the built environment in Ontario, Canada on the requirements and application of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The concepts and technical details of this standard can be applied to public spaces universally. The goal of this course is to provide design professionals with the knowledge and understanding they need to effectively apply the AODA Accessibility Standard for the Design of Public Spaces to their project work.
