Summer of Play - Important Information for YouthBorders Members
Over the past two weeks YouthBorders has been working with Scottish Borders Council and other partners to develop the plans for "Summer of Play" in the Borders. In particular we are working with the local authority around additional provision of play and outdoor experiences for children and young people in rural villages and communities. If you would like to know more and become involved in the project please contact Susan ASAP.
In the next few weeks we will be sharing details of a new micro-grants scheme for play equipment for voluntary and community groups to apply to; and we will be in touch with our members about a small pot of funding for subsidised spaces on your existing holiday provision for young people who may face financial or other barriers to participation. Finally, if you have holiday activity planned please tag us in on your social media posts when promoting your plans or send details directly to Jemma
Power of Youth Day during Volunteers Week
Yesterday was #PowerOfYouthDay during #VolunteersWeekScot, YouthBorders and our partners at Volunteer Centre Borders  have pledged to the #iwill campaign to support youth social action.
Last week we co-hosted the first meeting of the Youth Volunteering Development Group, bringing together community groups and organisations who can provide volunteering opportunities to young people. Over the coming months we will explore themes including recruiting young volunteers, supporting young volunteers, risk assessment and insurance for young volunteers, and exploring family and group volunteering. If you want to join us, share experience, learn and develop in a supportive peer space then drop us a message.
Fond Farewell to Colin
At YouthBorders we are so lucky to have a brilliantly committed team of volunteer trustees. It is with a huge amount of respect, gratitude and appreciation that we bid a fond farewell to our Chairperson, Colin Easton. Colin has volunteered his time, expertise and considerable knowledge to our charity and youth work in the Borders since joining us as a trustee in July 2015. Colin moves on from YouthBorders, today, after 6 years of outstanding voluntary service. We wish him well for the future and his next adventures. We are pretty sure that the volunteering gene in Colin will ensure he is not a stranger to the voluntary sector in the Borders for long!
We will be introducing our new YouthBorders Chairperson on our social media pages on Friday 4th June, following our board meeting which takes place this evening.

COVID-19 Guidance and Information: Updates

Youth Work and CLD
The Youth Work guidance was most recently updated on 26th April 2021. To understand the detail of the changes you should read both the Scottish Government guidance for the CLD sector and the youth work Covid-19: Guiding Framework to support the delivery of youth work services.
Scottish Borders will move to Level 1 on Saturday 5th June. Current permitted activity includes:

  • Youth Work (Under 18 years old): Youth work permitted indoors and outdoors with a maximum number of 30 people in any space (including youth workers)
  • Youth Work (18 years and over): Youth work permitted indoors and outdoors with a maximum number of 15 people (including youth workers)
  • Residential youth work activity can resume in line with the phased approach and timescales set out in the Schools visit guidance.
  • Guidance for the delivery of youth work services has been updated to provide further detail on travel advice in relation to Level 3 areas.
In addition:
  • Numbers: When considering numbers of young people, you should ensure that your space has the capacity to allow for 2m social distancing per young person aged 12 and over (including staff). You should “Determine Capacity” for your space and record this in your risk assessment.
  • Please refer to the CLD guidance for details on ventilation/ hygiene and health of staff and service users. The Scottish Government has also produced an advice guide highlighting key ventilation practice

If you have space that you wish to assess the capacity of, this useful guide from the Scottish Government can support you with this calculation and to prompt you through other considerations when assessing capacity.

For any specific questions regarding the guidance please contact Ayliffe at YouthBorders or visit the YouthLink Scotland FAQ.

Multi-purpose Community Facilities
The Scottish government guidance for the safe use of multi-purpose community facilities during the covid-19 pandemic was updated on the 30th April 2021.
This guidance is for those managing community centres, youth centres, village halls, and other community facilities and is primarily about how to reopen buildings as safely as possible.
It will also be relevant to our members who hire or use a community centre as well as those who own and let their own premises to others.
The guidance sets out the 5 levels of protection and what is permitted at each level.  It recognises that CLD activity for youth work and adult learning is an essential part of Scotland’s education system providing services to some of the most vulnerable people living in our communities. The community facilities are therefore permitted to grant access in line with  the CLD sectoral guidance which outlines specific restrictions and considerations to be followed at each protection level.
Permitted activities should only be reinstated following a COVID-19 risk assessment and any subsequent mitigating measures put in place, such as enhanced cleaning, hygiene, and physical distancing measures.
Live Borders have set out their timeline for re-opening facilities in the Scottish Borders. The indicative date for reopening of halls and community centres operated by Live Borders is 30 August 2021.
If you have any question regarding this guidance, please contact Ayliffe at YouthBorders.

LGBT Youth Scotland - Pride Picnic
This June, come together outdoors and reconnect with loved ones while fundraising for a good cause. Host a Pride Picnic to raise money and help LGBT Youth Scotland make life better for young people.

A Pride Picnic can be as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be: a few drinks with friends or a pot luck picnic to show off your culinary skills.

Register for a digital Picnic Pack for hosts, which is filled with inspiration including fun activities for all ages and some simple ways to collect donations from your attendees.

With most Pride events on hold for 2021, they wanted to find another way to keep that community spirit alive while following government guidance. They'd normally raise thousands of pounds for their services during Pride season, and this year they won't let the pandemic stop them from raising funds while having fun!

What’s more, if you register your picnic before Sunday 6th June, you could be in with the chance of winning an exclusive prize from one of their small business partners. Prizes include an afternoon tea voucher, delicious coffee and baked goods, and even a tattoo!

Invite your friends, get creative, and make the most of this summer as we look towards brighter days!

LGBT Domestic Abuse Project Consultation
LGBT Youth Scotland developed the LGBT Domestic Abuse Project in 2007 to raise awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people’s experiences of domestic abuse and to support mainstream services across the gender-based violence and related sectors to develop inclusive policies and practices. They believe that every LGBT person experiencing domestic abuse has the right to receive a supportive service response regardless of which service provider they access.

To achieve this, their LGBT Domestic Abuse Project aims to develop new digital training that will offer a blend of e-learning and interactive training. They want to ensure that the training is fit for purpose and responds to the learning needs of professionals who work directly and indirectly with domestic abuse survivors.

That's where you come in...

Whether you work in a domestic abuse or gender-based violence service, or a related field such as housing, health, criminal justice, advice services, or education; by taking part in this consultation, you will be helping us to understand the learning needs of cross-sector professionals. It should only take 10 - 15 mins to complete and they won’t ask you to identify yourself or the organisation you work for. The ideas, comments or questions you share will inform the content and delivery approaches of the new training.

Youthlink Scotland and Youth Scotland launch, new Access to Facilities survey to gauge ongoing barriers to youth work delivery

The survey asks organisations from across the youth work sector about the challenges and barriers they currently face in delivering indoor, digital, detached, and outdoor youth work.

The Access to Facilities survey will provide a picture of current access to spaces and venues across the country, and will shed light on the difficulties faced by youth work organisations and projects as we support our young people to access crucial services.  The results from this survey will be fed directly into Youthlink Scotland’s discussions with the Scottish Government, COSLA and others on the opening of facilities in line with the national guidance.

Youth work organisations and projects across Scotland are encouraged to fill out this survey so we can ensure that our young people have vital youth work support going forward.
The survey only takes a couple of minutes to fill in and is open until Monday 7th June 2021. Click here to take the survey now
