Update: Waste Sorted Awards

The Town of Cambridge recently won the Waste Sorted Waste Innovation of The Year Award for its Pool Cover Recycling Program - the first of its kind in Australia.

The Town was up against other great waste initiatives from the Department of Finance and private companies. After more than a year of research and collaboration with Green Machines Lab, Poly Pipe Recycling and Aussie Pool Covers, the Town devised a system to collect cast-off pool covers and recycle them into useful products.

The Town has now hosted two Pool Blanket Drop-Off Days and has received over 100 blankets to be recycled. So far, pool blankets have been turned into products including builders' film and wheel stops for use in car parks. This program is about to be expanded and will be another first for a WA council.

Update: Verge Valet

Just a reminder: another bulk waste collection has been released to Cambridge residents, bringing the allocation to 2 x Bulk Waste and 1 x Green Waste for each financial year. Residents can trade their bulk collections for green waste if desired, and there is now a Verge Valet extra option once allocations are exhausted. Businesses and non-rateable properties are also able to use the Verge Valet extra service.

Details on our website, WMRC’s website or on 9384 6711.

Additionally, Charity Drop-Off Days, E-Waste Days and a new program of Plastics Drop-Off Days have been increased in number to assist residents to dispose of usable items – this will help maximise the allowable cubic meterage for valet collections.
A bicycle drop off day is also being organised for later in the year.

Charity Drop-Off Days: June 12th + October 2nd

E-Waste Days: July 3rd + November 6th

Plastics Drop-Off Day: June 26th trial with three more dates to be announced

Nappy Workshop - June 10th

Did you know that a baby will use between 4,000 and 6,000 nappies before they are toilet trained?  Given that the average disposable nappy takes about 500 years to decompose, it is likely that every disposable nappy ever worn is still out there, somewhere... Not to mention the thousands of dollars spent buying all those nappies!

If you have been wondering about modern cloth nappies, and whether they are worth the switch, this workshop might be for you! This workshop is an introduction to modern cloth nappies and being run to show you where to start, help troubleshoot for those parents who have tried it or want to explore modern cloth nappy options.

Find out what you need to get started, touch and feel the various types of cloth nappies, learn how to fit one, know the secrets for effective washing, and discover how to keep your baby's skin healthy. We'll also answer all of your cloth nappy questions such as:
  • What is a drypail?
  • What do I do with the poo?
  • How do I stop the leaks?
  • How to get them clean and fresh every wash?
  • What type of cloth nappy is best for me?

Kintsugi: The Art of Broken Pieces - June 24th

Introducing to our workshop program: an age old way to minimise waste to landfill… Kintsugi is the Japanese art of putting broken ceramics back together with gold — built on the idea that in embracing flaws and imperfections, you can create an even stronger, more beautiful piece of art.

Every break is unique and instead of repairing an item like new, the 400-year-old technique actually highlights the "scars" as a part of the design.

This workshop on June 24th includes a gold repair kit with all necessary equipment and tuition.

When: Thursday June 24th | 6:30 – 8:30pm
Where: Town of Cambridge Admin Building
