Welcome to the June edition of the SASTA newsbytes. It was great to see so many SASTA members at our professional development workshop back in April. We hope you enjoyed the new 'Long Service Awards'. We found the introduction of the new awards to be an awesome opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate our members dedication to road safety and sustainable transport.
Thank you to those who took the time to fill out the post workshop evaluation form. Your feedback is hugely valued and of great use in our planning process. Feedback and new ideas are always welcome and can be passed on through your local SASTA Executive.
Another big thank you to all those who have sent through content for this edition of the SASTA newsbytes. Newsbytes are currently sent out on a quarterly basis. We encourage you to send through snapshots of your work and good news stories or learnings to be shared.
With July nearly upon us, you should expect to hear from your local SASTA Executive with information on the renewal of your membership. We look forward to another year with you all.
The first half of 2021 has flown by! We wish you all the best over this next quarter and we thank you for the work you do to help keep our communities safe.

RYDA Gains a Tick of Approval
An evidence-driven, best practice approach to road safety education is the cornerstone of the RYDA program. Road Safety Education worked collaboratively with Waka Kotahi to undertake an extensive, independent, full program evaluation to ensure RYDA aligned with Waka Kotahi's good practice road safety education guidance.
During the evaluation Road Safety Education embraced opportunities to make improvements to the workshop content and resources. Waka Kotahi and Road Safety Education are very pleased to share that RYDA is now an RSP fundable program.

And the Award goes to...
It was a time to celebrate recently when The Far North REAP Road Safety team was presented the Safe and Sustainable Transport Association (SASTA) Cedric Rogers Award, at the national SASTA/Waka Kotahi Road Safety Professional Development workshop in Wellington. This annual award is given to those that have shown achievement in their ‘safe system’ approach to road safety and/or sustainable transport work. The winner is judged for leadership, innovation, and achievement.
The nomination for this award included the development and marketing rollout of the local One Tear Too Many road safety education campaign, in which Far North REAP Road Safety has developed and grown in conjunction with its district partners that make up the Far North Road Safety team. The campaign has gone from image content on roadside billboards, bus backs, sports team apparel, and resources, to a video production marketing campaign seen on TVNZ on demand, social and print media, and radio digital platforms.
The award in particular recognized the partnership model that Far North REAP Road Safety has created with other far north community-based organisations - to deliver sustainable and effective grass-roots education to Far North communities.

Another Reason to Celebrate
It was another time of celebration for Far North REAP’s Road Safety team last week when their radio ad series for the One Tear Too Many – Slow Down ‘Think’ campaign received the award for Best Creative Best Commercial Campaign at the NZ Radio Awards.
The objective of this award is to recognise excellence in the writing and production of two or more linked commercials and/or jingles devised as a strategic campaign that has achieved outstanding effectiveness for a single client.
The radio ads were created by Richard Mathews at Mediaworks who formed the series of scripts from the video production designed by Facebox in Whangarei.
Jodi Betts (Far North REAP Road Safety – Project Lead) stated that the award really acknowledged the collaborative work between Far North REAP, Facebox, Waka Kotahi, and Mediaworks. The campaign set out to reach people of Northland specifically and continues with the idea of getting people to think about their behaviour on the road, however, holds a different style of message delivery. The campaign tells the story of an 11-year-old boy who is killed by a speeding driver and shows a number of people affected by his death.
Jodi points out we (road users) really need to consider all of the people affected when a road tragedy takes place. This may just be enough for a driver to consider not taking an unnecessary risk.

Motorcycle Safety meets Men's Health Week
Road Safety Stakeholders in Canterbury came together to run an exciting new event for Men's Health Week. 'Kickstart' is a collective involving the Waimakariri and Selwyn District Council, Christchurch City Council, ACC, Ride Forever Trainers, Motorcycle Safety Advisory Committee, and the Police.
Kickstart usually runs an event in November focusing on motorcycle safety and practical skills. But this year, recognising that many riders take to their bikes to relieve life’s stresses and that riding requires a rider to be in a good ‘head-space’, the opportunity was taken to hold events during Men’s Health week and focus on riders mental wellbeing. This is where the new event, 'Highway to Well' came to life.
'Highway to Well' was run over two evenings in Men's Health Week and focused on motorcycle safety, and mental health and wellbeing. Guest speakers spoke at both the Hornby and Woodend events, including a social worker and a rider who had suffered through some tough times. Both men shared their stories and tips for maintaining good mental health and what had helped them stay safe on their bikes.
Staff from Menz Medical were on hand to do basic health checks as well as the Canterbury Men’s Centre and Green Prescription who provided information on health and wellbeing. Police staff from the motorcycle team also attended alongside our local Ride Forever trainers.
A great turnout at both events provided an opportunity for riders to come together and share their common love of motorcycling as well as checking in on their health.

Auckland Transport's 'Mobile Moment' campaign
Auckland Transport launched a new driver distraction campaign last month to encourage drivers to have a ‘mobile moment’ before setting off on their journey by activating their 'do not disturb' mobile phone function.
It was all about encouraging drivers to drive safely without the temptation of using their mobile phones. Having a ‘mobile moment’ before setting off enables drivers to 'drive focused; arrive safe'.
Driver distractions continue to be a priority in the Auckland region as deaths and serious injuries from this road safety theme continue to increase. Unfortunately, driver distraction remains under-reported in crash statistics worldwide, due to the difficulty in obtaining reliable information around pre-crash circumstances.
Research shows that large numbers of people are using 'smart phones' and electronic 'in-car' entertainment for reasons such as GPS navigation, music, and social media, but not necessarily in a safe way. These distractions cause drivers to take their hands off their steering wheels and their mind and eyes off the road. Any distraction for more than a second can significantly increase the likelihood of a crash.
This campaign aimed at 18- to 39-year-olds appeared on social media channels during the month of May like Facebook, DV360 YouTube, DV360 TVNZ On Demand, and radio stations such as TRB radio (George, Flava, Edge, Humm, Mai, Tarana, and ZM).

Manawatū Child Restraint Community Event
Road safety professionals in Palmerston North collaborated to run a successful community child restraint education event and checking clinic. Eight trained car seat technicians and a local car mechanic supported this initiative.
The idea behind the event was to complement our BAU activities such as Roadside checking clinics and visits to early childhood venues. The event was held on a Saturday in a Bunnings carpark. 68 families took part with 100 car seats seen by the technicians in a four hour period.
Organisations involved were Horizons Regional Council, Royal NZ Plunket Society, Little Buds, Treasured Cargo and Agnew’s Auto Services. For info on this event including H & S plans contact Alastair Mayston

Tararua Truck Driver Health & Safety Stop
A truck driver health and safety stop was held in Tararua region just south of Dannevirke on SH2 during March 2021. The annual event is coordinated by Horizons Regional Council road safety, with Tararua District Council/Alliance, Waka Kotahi, Dannevirke Police, Road Transport Association of NZ and Tararua Health Group all on board.
The operation is used to promote messages around truck driver health and road safety. Free refreshments (hot/cold drinks and food) are offered to drivers as well as three minute health checks (by a registered nurse).
Up to 100 trucks are directed off the road over the four hour period and for those who don’t want to stop, they can take a slight detour back to the SH and continue their journey.
Lots of fun doing the activity and lots of positive comments from all those involved.

The Australian Road Safety Conference 2021 is being held in Melbourne and online from the 28-30 September. The early bird discount is ending on the 31 July.
