From the Principal's desk

After several months of low transmission, the number of COVID infections has begun to rise sharply in several parts of the country. As we are entering a possible third wave it is even more important that we follow protocols including the wearing of masks, social distancing, and ensuring adequate ventilation.

Although many are resentful of the infringements on their freedom due to COVID-19 regulations, we are in this together and we owe it to one another to prevent the spread. We ask that parents/guardians help by reinforcing the importance of social distancing that includes learners attending social gatherings over weekends. This poses a risk to those who attended as well as to their families and to the staff, several of whom are teaching your children despite having comorbidities themselves. I ask that, as parents/guardians, you help your child to understand that the situation regarding COVID-19 is a life-threatening situation. Please help us to ensure that we can continue teaching and learning by keeping our COVID-19 risks as low as possible.

As learners are preparing themselves for the mid-year assessments, I encourage them to find a good balance between the studying of material, practice of past papers and downtime to allow their brains space to process it all.  My advice, which I hope will be taken seriously, is to drastically reduce your child’s non-productive screen time by limiting their access to phones and social media.  Particularly at bedtime, when it is healthy to not have the screened devices in their rooms, but rather somewhere else in the house charging for the next day.  It might mean buying a cheap alarm clock so as to reduce the need for the phone’s alarm!  Teenagers need sleep and often this is disrupted by late night conversations or scrolling through social media.  They will thank you later.

It is a daunting role parenting teenagers and this is made even more complex during the unprecedented times we find ourselves in.  It is, however, a vital role we all play in growing our leaders of the future, so I wish you all strength though this time.

Decades Dress-up Day

On Friday 28 May learners and staff had fun dressing up the Decades - from 20s flapper fashion to 50s swing dresses, 60s hippies, 70s bellbottoms and 80s neon! We raised R13 343 for Atlantic Hope, a safe haven for abandoned babies in Cape Town. Thank you to all who participated and supported this FUNdraiser.
