Co-Creating Neighbourhoods for Encounter and Belonging (ARDI, Alliance4Europe, BIC Brussels) 15.06.2021

Co-Creating Neighbourhoods for Encounter and Belonging will explore some ways in which urban design has the potential to create conditions that can give rise to actionable forms of togetherness and deepen our understanding about who we are and how we aspire to relate to one another. Residents of a neighbourhood can develop a sense of belonging and build up the resolve to eradicate injustice when they are able to meet, interact, contribute and become protagonists in their local reality.

In the context of three European policy initiatives - the EU Anti-Racism Action Plan, the EU Action Plan on Inclusion and Integration and the New European Bauhau Initiative -, the event will address the significant potential of diverse populations to shape their local reality and to contribute to vibrant forms of society-building.

Participants will during an interactive conversation explore questions such as: What conceptions and uses of public spaces can nurture a deep and all-embracing sense of belonging? When designing such spaces, what kind of relationships do we aspire to foster between diverse peoples? How can they be encouraged to have meaningful interactions with their neighbours and populations of diverse backgrounds? What prevailing assumptions perpetuate disintegrative forces and processes in neighbourhoods? How can diverse local populations participate in the planning and design of their neighbourhoods?

The event on 15th June will kick-start a participatory conversation on the European level and pave the way for a series of national chapters. On 21 June, 19:00-20:30 CET, the first national chapter focuses on Germany in general and Frankfurt am Main in particular.
