Join Anette Lenz, Mario Eskenazi, Jim Sutherland & Elizabeth Resnick at next week’s Type Tuesday

Dear friends

The next Type Tuesday is a virtual launch party, designed to celebrate the publication of the latest edition of Eye, and we are thrilled to have four guests – Anette Lenz (France), Mario Eskenazi (Spain), Jim Sutherland (UK) and Elizabeth Resnick (USA) – whose work is featured in Eye 101. The tickets for this Zoom event – which you can buy via Eventbrite – cost a mere £5 (£3 for concessions) and the proceeds support the St Bride Foundation. Start times are 6.30pm BST, 7.30pm CEST and 1.30pm EDT, etc., and you must book your ticket by 4pm BST on 8 June. More details here, on the Eye blog.

The new issue includes Jan Middendorp’s profile of Anette Lenz [above],

Sarah Snaith’s Reputations interview with Mario Eskenazi,

and Simon Esterson’s ‘Ten projects by Jim Sutherland [above].

Elizabeth Resnick will talk about Jacqueline Casey [above], who was instrumental in developing what became known as the MIT Style. She will show Casey’s early work for Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Office of Publications (where she learned graphic design from Muriel Cooper by doing summer session catalogue covers) and how this work was directly inspired by Thérèse Moll's visit to MIT in 1959. See Elizabeth’s articles ‘Science and design’ in Eye 101 and ‘The enigma of Thérèse Moll’ in Eye 98.

We’ll be talking to Anette, Mario and Jim about their studio practices and a multitude of projects, which collectively ranges from big brands to cultural projects, from posters to packaging. Although we call these events Type Tuesdays, they are always about much more than typography, and we welcome questions from the audience, using the Zoom webinar functions. Tickets are on sale until 4pm BST on Tuesday 8 June.

Do keep an eye on the Eye Events page for details of interesting online type and graphic design events coming up, including several for which Eye is media sponsor.

The hotly anticipated ‘MagCulture Live: We love New York’ is on the (British) afternoon of 9 June (the day after Type Tuesday) and features Françoise Mouly (The New Yorker) and Lucas Mascatello, editor of Civilization – both familiar to Eye 100 readers – plus Kim Hastreiter (The New Now)Caitlin Thompson (Racquet) and Lavaille Lavette (Ebony)

We heartily recommend the ambitious Typographics 2021 festival taking place online throughout June every Tuesday and Thursday.

The annual Justin Howes Memorial Lecture for the St Bride Foundation (also on Wednesday 9 June), will be ‘Western foundry founts in the Kannada and Telugu scripts’ presented by Pria Ravichandran.

As usual, you have to subscribe to Eye or purchase a copy to read it, but there are a few pieces you can read online in full, including ‘Los Angeles’ lost palace of treasures’ [above], a Photo Critique by Rick Poynor, and my review of My Town [below] by David Gentleman.

See the full list of Eye 101 contents here, including the contributions of our four Type Tuesday guests.

If you aren’t already an Eye subscriber, it’s easy to subscribe online. Postage and sturdy packaging is included free of charge, and you will never miss another issue. However if you would prefer to order another way, please email our subscriptions team, or call them on +44 1371 851885. We have a (fast-diminishing) stock of back issues that you can order from here while stocks last.

Best wishes – and don’t forget to book for Type Tuesday on 8 June.
