UW ART CLASS OF 2021 MASTER OF FINE ARTS EXHIBITIONS

During the Spring 2021 semester, campus access restrictions prevented us from opening our galleries to the public. Here's your chance to see many of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Art Department Class of 2021 MFA Exhibitions for the first time!

The MFA Exhibitions mark the culmination of a three-year degree program that emphasizes development of a rigorous studio art practice under the supervision of a faculty guidance committee. Exploring an inter-disciplinary approach to art making, as well as course work in art history and related fields, artists cultivate professional practices that facilitates a sustainable career in the arts.

Join us in celebrating our Class of 2021 UW-Madison Graduate professionals!

The Hallowed Veil
by Jonathan Byxbe

We have long used folklore to better understand our world and pass that knowledge down to future generations, with each generation adding to the stories, incorporating layers of guidance and information. In my artworks, I share my stories in the layers of my reductive relief prints, stacking my knowledge on the foundations passed down to me. Ink and information are both layered to offer visual references to those who take the time to discover them.

Jonathan Byxbe first started his path towards printing in undergrad, earning a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida. He then moved to Portland, Oregon where he continued to make art through the cooperative called Flight 64. During the five years he spent in Portland, he also worked in the production field of screen printing. In 2018, Jonathan was accepted into the graduate printmaking program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This program included working for Tandem Press as the project assistant in his third year. While this career has included many details into different methods of printmaking, relief printmaking has always been the backbone of Jonathan's work, with a personal favorite style of relief being reduction prints. This show, The Hallowed Veil, is the culmination of his three years in graduate school and consists of reductive relief prints delving into the artist's own folklore that attempts to give context to the world around us.

Trending by Oudi Wan

We live in an era that is dominated by images and this has created a cultural phenomenon in which the value of things is often determined by appearance. In China, many individuals are fond of following the trend or pursuing the current popular things, and they are keen to take pictures of these things and share on social media. Consequently, this is a strange phenomenon in society today— buying a Starbucks is more significant than buying a good cup of coffee. Many individuals follow something just because of their appearance, brand or popularity. I use filigree technique to satirize this social phenomenon. I, coming from a Chinese perspective, am hoping that my work can let the viewers think more about the intrinsic value of things than the over-pursuit of their superficial surface. In this era of machine production instead of labor, each individual object loses its uniqueness because it is produced so many times by machine, and because of its ubiquitousness, sometimes people seem to even ignore its presence. I want to use this precious technique of filigree to wake the audience up and think again what these objects really bring to us.

Between Dark and Dawn: A Personal Exploration of the Maternal Spirit Master of Arts Exhibition by Lianne Milton
April 23 - End of Summer

Location: University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education Art Gallery, Education Building, 1st Floor, 1000 Bascom Mall, Madison, WI

Between Dark and Dawn is a personal photographic exploration of an altered temporality and generational linearity of the maternal spirit. I draw on the strength of my ancestors, like mother trees who nurture and protect their young. The wild and wise of nature’s fertile landscape reminds me how motherhood is complex, diverse and extraordinary.

The School of Education Gallery is open between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. If it is closed, please visit student services on the Lower level and ask to open the gallery.

Our minds intrinsically seek out patterns everywhere in our world whether they occur organically in nature or are human made. In an often irrational reality, pattern becomes a source of regularity and predictability allowing us to make sense of our surroundings. This exhibition of work in a variety of media explores prevalence of pattern in art and fine craft.

February 12 - July 24

Artist: Professor Emeritus Tom Loeser

Location: Center for Art in Wood, 141 N 3rd St, Philadelphia, PA

Presenting imaginative furniture and works on paper by Wisconsin-based maker and designer Tom Loeser. This playful show encourages viewers to shake up their habits and interact with the environment and one another, while considering issues such as body posture and etiquette that are often taken for granted. Loeser’s work also raises a clever question: “If the furniture we sit on every day were totally different, would our lives be different, too?”

Guest curated by Glenn Adamson, Please Please Please reimagines what furniture can be by juxtaposing the artist’s furniture with his series of pyrographs and cyanotype prints. Previous venues for this traveling exhibition include the Museum of Art and Design, San Francisco, the San Diego State University Downtown Gallery, and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.
