PRAYERS

President Teuscher has written the following, with the request that the people of Lutheran Church–Canada lift up the people of Ethiopia in prayer during this time of dire need:

Gracious and merciful God and Father, although Your Son, Jesus Christ, came to bring us Your heavenly peace, violence and conflict still rage among Your children on earth.

We bring before Your throne of grace and mercy the needs of the people in Ethiopia where there is increasing civil unrest in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic that is raging out of control.

Put an end to the bloodshed and this catastrophe. Grant relief to the injured and the homeless. Mercifully embrace the frightened in Your love. Empower the weak with Your strength. Restrain the wicked by Your might.

Preserve those who confess Your holy name that their faith may not falter. And comfort by Your Spirit the many people who have immigrated to Canada from Ethiopia whose loved ones are in danger; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

LUTHERAN FOUNDATION CANADA

The Harvest is Plentiful

“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.”
- Matthew 9:36-38

Imagine what it looks like from God’s perspective. So many of His people who still do not know, trust, or believe in His son Jesus Christ. The harvest is huge. Yet He continues in His plan to bring in this harvest through the preaching of His Word. God gives the seed, and God brings about the harvest – through the work of His Church.

We have the privilege to be a part of this plan in our daily lives, through our vocations and with our tithes and offerings, which support the work of our church. But have you ever thought about extending that financial support after you die? Establishing a gift in your will, or through another means within your estate, can provide significant future funds to assist in this incredible harvest.

If you would like more information on how to develop a planned gift in your estate, please contact Lutheran Foundation Canada or visit us at www.lutheranfoundation.ca.

www.LutheranFoundation.ca

Your estate plan should divide your assets, not your family! Many parents may look at their children and claim “they will never fight over my estate”. Yet sibling rivalry shows up fairly often in the management of an estate and the distribution of assets. Whether it’s grabbing items before a Will is reviewed, joint ownership of an asset that turns into a claim, declaring a parent promised a particular item to them, or just plain greed, arguments resulting from poor planning can tear a family apart. Many of these challenges can be avoided with good planning and a family discussion. To learn more about improving your plans, click on the link below.

SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (Proper 5B)

Genesis 3:8–15
2 Corinthians 4:13–5:1
Mark 3:20–35

Jesus Has Defeated the Devil and Released Us from the Bondage of Sin and Death

The devil deceived us, enticing us to disregard and disobey the Word of God and driving us to hide “from the presence of the Lord God.” But the Lord, in His mercy, promised a Savior, who would set Himself against the devil on our behalf (Gen. 3:8–15). The Son of Man came, the incarnate Son of God, conceived and born of the woman. He “first binds the strong man,” Satan, by atoning for the sins of the world, thereby removing the condemnation of the Law and the fear of death (Mark 3:27). Now He plunders the devil’s house by calling all men to repent. Though He appears to be “out of his mind” (Mark 3:21), He fulfills the will of God and makes of us His own brothers and sisters. Therefore, “we do not lose heart,” despite the suffering, sin and death that we experience in this fallen world. “He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus.” By His grace, we are “being renewed day by day.” For the Gospel is daily bringing us into His presence, not for punishment, but for “an eternal weight of glory” (2 Cor. 4:14–17).
