Pride! But make it intersectional.
Kimberlé Crenshaw first coined the term intersectionality to highlight the ways multiple forms of inequality can compound and exacerbate each other.
Layered social identities such as sexual orientation, race, gender, class, and immigration status, are met with barriers. For many, these identities are compounded, leading to increased discrimination.
Celebrating and recognizing Pride without using an intersectional lens can be deeply harmful, causing erasure, perpetuating white supremacy and further deepening inequities.
So let’s celebrate the heck out of Pride this month, but let’s do it thoughtfully. Join us for a Pride celebration TONIGHT, complete with DJ TrueNice spinning party jams. And later in the month, tune into our Pride Happy (Lunch) Hour, where we will explore the concept of intersectionality more deeply.
