Dear <<First Name>>,

Happy Pride Month! Pride month is a celebration of our diversity, recognition of the strides we’ve made thanks to LGBTQ2S+ activists, & a reminder of the work we still have to do.

Our government has taken many tangible steps to ensure that everyone, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation, is safe and included. Among other steps, we made changes to ensure the spectrum of gender identity is included on B.C. government ID; moved to ensure publicly funded, affirming lower surgeries are available in B.C., making us the first province in Western Canada to offer these essential procedures right here at home; ensured all 60 school districts and several First Nations and independent schools are part of the B.C. SOGI Educator Network to help schools be more inclusive for students; and expanded coverage for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) & post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to ensure people at risk of contracting HIV in BC are benefiting from preventative treatment.

We'll continue working to ensure services are accessible & equitable for LGBTQ2S+ folks.

Remains of 215 children found at former Kamloops residential school

Like many, the news of Tk’emlups te Secwepemc finding the remains of 215 children at the former Kamloops residential school shook me to my core. If you are Indigenous and need support, the toll-free KUU-US Crisis line is available 24/7. You can reach them at 1-800-588-8717.

Children were taken from their families & communities during this dark time, & the violence the Canadian residential school system inflicted upon Indigenous peoples continues to ring through generations. For now, my thoughts are with the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc & all who mourn.

I encourage you, if you're a settler, to reflect on how your presence on this land impacts Indigenous people and how you can commit to reconciliation and decolonization in your own life.

Minimum wage increased to $15.20 an hour

Throughout the pandemic, front line workers have been essential in keeping our communities going. Those front line workers include many hard-working people who still struggle to make ends meet, including grocery store workers, servers, and cleaners. Our government believes that these and all workers should make a fair and dignified wage. This week, we increased the minimum wage in B.C. to $15.20 an hour. We’ve also eliminated the discriminatory lower minimum wage for liquor servers – these workers will now make the regular minimum wage.

Since 2018, we’ve been regularly increasing the minimum wage, which was $11.35 an hour when this work began. Close to 400,000 people have benefited from these increases, the majority of whom are women, immigrants and youth – people who bear the brunt of low-wage labour.

Increasing the minimum wage is one way we are tackling inequality while making life more affordable.

2,400 new affordable rental homes on the way in B.C.

More than 2,400 new affordable rental homes are coming for people with moderate and low incomes in 39 communities throughout the province, including 129 in Burnaby at 6488 Byrnepark Dr in partnership with M'akola Housing Society.

These new homes mean that thousands of families, seniors and Indigenous peoples in our province will enjoy safe, new, affordable homes. These homes are part of the nearly 30,000 affordable homes now complete or underway in every corner of the province, building on the significant momentum as we recover from more than a decade of underinvestment in housing by the old government. We're making good progress in addressing the housing crisis for all British Columbians, and there's more to do.

A total of 47 new projects have been selected through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund (CHF). The fund will provide approximately 2,455 rental homes for individuals, families, seniors, people with disabilities and Indigenous peoples throughout the province.

B.C. hospitals to resume regular surgical operations by June 7

One of the toughest decisions in the early days of the pandemic was postponing scheduled surgeries. Since we launched B.C.’s commitment to surgical renewal 97% of postponed surgeries have been completed. These are significant achievements, but there’s more to do. We’ll keep making progress to deliver the better, faster care people need.

B.C. hospitals that diverted surgical beds and resources to cope with a third wave of COVID-19 will be resuming regular operations by June 7, and patients who had their surgeries cancelled can expect those procedures to be rescheduled soon.
