Hong Kong Unison meets  the Chairman of Legco Panel of Education, Dr. Hon Priscilla LEUNG Mei-fun

On 17 May Hong Kong Unison had a zoom meeting with the Chairman of Legco Panel of Education, Dr. Hon Priscilla LEUNG Mei-fun. We had a fruitful exchange and spoke about education support for ethnic minority students, the lack of measures during the pandemic, a comprehensive Chinese as a second language (CSL) curriculum and kindergarten support measures. We are hopeful that the education support measures for non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students and the accountability of the additional funding for implementing the Chinese Curriculum Second Language Learning Framework will be soon discussed in Legco Panel of Education. The support for ethnic minority students directly impacts the social mobility and employability of ethnic minority youth.

Online Chinese Enhancement class and One-to-one Chinese Tutoring

Hong Kong Unison's online Chinese enhancement class is in full swing. Children enjoy the classes immensely. A parent told us that the school teacher was pleasantly suprised to see the improvement in the child's Chinese proficiency after joining our class. Previously the child was not interested in Cantonese and mainly use English to communicate. The willingness to speak more Cantonese and trying to use it more in school has helped the child to adjust well at school too. The monthly test shows a vast improvement in the performance of all students.

There is considerable progress in tutees of the One-to-one online Chinese Tutoring. Parents mentioned their children's score in the Chinese examination at school has improved. Unison monitors the classes regularly and provides helpful suggestions to the tutors.

Primary One Allocation (POA) Results

The results of Central Allocation (CA) for Primary One Allocation (POA) will be sent to parents via registered post on 2-3 June. Parents who have registered their mobile number will receive an SMS on 2 June. Ethnic minority parents are often confused of the procedures hence Hong Kong Unison conducted a parents group on 31 May to talk about procedure of registration, knock-door policy, and how to make a child’s portfolio and important dates. Unison staff is contacting parents who are awaiting results by phone and WhatsApp to provide support. Additionally we circulated a poster and info regarding POA results through various social media channels.

Join us in welcoming our intern!

Charlotte has always been passionate about equality and human rights issues, such as gender and race equality, LGBTQ+ rights and believes in advocating for disenfranchised communities. After seeing the discrimination and prejudice ethnic minorities faced throughout the pandemic she decided to reach out to Unison to work with us and help in any way that she can. She has previously worked with schools in the UK with ethnic minority students by assisting with their education, and also tutored ethnic minority students in Hong Kong at community centers. She hopes to continue to utilize her privilege to bring about change and to support and empower ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.
