Last month Eastside Community Heritage held a live interview with local author and historian, Sylvia Kent to mark the Becontree estate's centenary. The author discussed her previous book Barking and Dagenham From Old Photographs. Often referred to as Britain's largest council estate, Becontree started out as a Utopian concept. To provide decent housing, and a good quality of life for returning service men and young families. At the time it was promoted as "Homes for Heroes", and many have talked about the delight of moving into a better standard of housing with community facilities.
Our Becoming Becontree online exhibit will be live by June 10th.
