Remembering Marks Gate and North Chadwell Heath
Eastside Community Heritage is happy to announce a new oral history project ‘Remembering Marks Gate and North Chadwell Heath’ that aims to collect local people’s stories for an exhibition about their memories of the area.
Marks Gate has a rich history - the name originally referring to the entrance or gate into Hainault Forest located near the medieval manor of ‘Marks’ which stood on what is now Warren Hall Farm.

“My first impression when I got there before I even got into the school and when we arrived and from the bus and walked along the road it was the fresh air; it smelt of the country side and the air seemed so much fresher.”

Previous Event: Eastside Community Heritage with author Sylvia Kent
Last month Eastside Community Heritage held a live interview with local author and historian, Sylvia Kent to mark the Becontree estate's centenary. The author discussed her previous book Barking and Dagenham From Old Photographs. Often referred to as Britain's largest council estate, Becontree started out as a Utopian concept. To provide decent housing, and a good quality of life for returning service men and young families. At the time it was promoted as "Homes for Heroes", and many have talked about the delight of moving into a better standard of housing with community facilities.

Our Becoming Becontree online exhibit will be live by June 10th.

Previous Event: Becoming Becontree Reminiscence Session
In May Eastside Community Heritage, were joined by Valance House for a joint reminiscence session. Old photographs and oral histories were shared and discussed by the group. The year 2021 marks 100 years since, the first residents moved into the Becontree Estate.

Oral History Snippet
"…they said that if we could see somewhere we liked, let them know and, ‘cos I was top of the housing list, and they would let me have it. And ‘course we found this one which was right on the top of me Mum’s house, which was brilliant, and so I went and said “Could we have it?” and they said “Yeh”.       Sylvia Malcom
