Hello | Welcome to our June newsletter! In this edition, we release our detailed OFC timetable, highlight our most recent publications, share the latest team news, and recommend a few dates for the diary...
Our upcoming OFC schedule

Conference | The Optical Networking and Communication Conference (OFC) is the largest global conference and exhibition for optical communications and networking professionals. TRANSNET presentations this year include an invited paper from Dr Zhixin Liu and two top-scored contributed papers from student researchers Ronit Sohanpal and Zichuan Zhou. Don’t miss the opportunity to discover more – please find our complete OFC schedule below.

Latest work on abstracted optical networks

Research Highlight | TRANSNET members have successfully demonstrated the abstraction of an installed optical network, an approach that could transform how networks are intelligently controlled and managed in the future. The research, published in Scientific Reports, was led Dr David Ives and Professor Seb Savory from our Cambridge site, along with members of our UCL team, and in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Bristol and KDDI Research.

New paper on maximising information rates

Research Highlight | By combining pilot-aided digital signal processing with high-order geometric constellation shaping, TRANSNET members from our UCL site, together with Dr Yuta Wakayama from KDDI Research, have reported the highest achievable information rate to date of any standard intradyne transmission system. The work was published this week in Optics Express – access the paper below.

News | Student members selected for Turing Scheme
Well done to TRANSNET student researchers Joshua Nevin and Christopher Parsonson, both of whom have been successful in their applications to the highly competitive Turing PhD Enrichment Scheme.

News | UCL team win 2021 JLT Best Paper Award
Congratulations to current and former TRANSNET members on their winning publication ‘End-to-End Deep Learning of Optical Fiber Communications’ which reconsiders how optical fibre communication systems are designed using artificial neural networks.
