Our BQ framework has revolutionized the teaching of the TOK course
Download the first 10 lessons of our pre-TOK course!
TOK is a daunting course for students, covering complex ideas, applying thinking skills to multiple contexts, and assessing understanding via two challenging and unfamiliar formats.
'Thinking for Yourself' enables you not only to prepare students for the TOK course, but also deliver a fantastic educational experience, introducing 14-15 year old learners to a carefully curated range of brilliant thinkers and concepts, and a powerful lexicon of knowledge-related terms. Full Access members of the site can now download and deliver lessons 9 and 10 of the course.
The lesson objective of lesson 9, Marshmallow Thinking, is: "I can explain how the way we think impacts on the well-being of the planet". It looks at the way in which we tend towards short-term thinking, and fail to factor in long (or even medium) term consequences as we view and interact with the world. We look at primarily at the ideas of Roman Krznaric, as well as the famous marshmallow experiment, and amongst the extension tasks are the ideas of Bina Venkataraman on how to overcome short-termism.
Us and Them, the tenth lesson, leads to students being able to "explain why viewing the world in a ‘tribalistic’ way can prevent us from understanding it objectively." During the lesson, students consider the extent to which knowers view the world in terms of 'us' and 'them', and what the consequences of this are. They meet thinkers such as Beau Lotto, Robert Sapolsky, and Amy Chua, work together to find a solution to the problems associated with 'tribalism', and present their ideas.
