Community Discussion on COVID Vaccines

The Office of Equity and Inclusion at the School of Medicine and Dentistry is presenting, “Protect Your Team, Learn About the Vaccine,”  a virtual conversation on COVID vaccines. Hear stories from local community members about their vaccine hesitancy and why they ultimately decided to get vaccinated. Angela Branche, M.D., assistant professor of Infectious Diseases and co-director of the Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit, will be available to answer questions. The event will be hosted by Norma Holland, director of Public Relations and Engagement in the URMC Office of Equity and Inclusion.
Date: Tuesday, June 15
Time: 7:00 pm

Spotlighting Cancer Research Across the CTSA Program

For National Cancer Research Month, the UR CTSI's Center for Leading Innovation and Collaboration spotlighted cutting-edge cancer research happening across the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program in an interactive map. While the UR CTSI was one of the first 12 institutions accepted into this prestigious program, it has grown to include over 60 of the nation's top biomedical research institutions. UR CTSI KL2 Scholar Nikesha Gilmore, Ph.D., was among those highlighted for her research on the link between frailty and inflammation in cancer patients.

UR CTSI Education Director Presents at Team Science Conference

Alfred Vitale, Ph.D., director of UR CTSI Research Education, is a co-author of a SplashTalk presentation, Multimodal Observations of Translational Health Team Science Competencies Through Sensemaking, for the 2021 International Science of Team Science (SciTS) Conference. This presentation addresses the lack of agreement/guidance on which competencies are critical for accomplishing translational team science. Presenters provide a framework for observation, a rationale for how sensemaking is an extension of competency mastery and show how these modalities can contribute to development and evaluation of the effectiveness of translational scientists and teams.

New UR CTSI Digital Health and Regulatory Science Core

The  UR CTSI has launched a new Digital Health and Regulatory Science core, offering a wide range of internal and external resources for researchers. The core's expert consultations and support can help you develop or use digital tools, methods or data in your research. The core also helps facilitate partnerships between researchers and regional technology development organizations.

Understanding the Assent Process with Children

Assenting children for research is a complex process. Since children are considered a vulnerable population, protections must be put in place to present research in language they understand while also determining their capacity to comprehend it.  Join this week's Human Research Protection Program Educational Forum, featuring Amy Vierhile, N.P., senior nurse practitioner of Child Neurology at URMC, to learn more about consent in the pediatric population.
Date: Thursday, June 10
Time: 12:00 – 1:00 pm

TIN Webinar: Participant Engagement Platform

This Trial Innovation Network (TIN) webinar features Stanford Medicine’s Research Participation services, which has developed the Participant Engagement Platform as a way of offering and managing “honest broker” outreach, such as direct email and Epic MyChart. Learn more about this new way to scale recruitment to engage more participants while protecting patient privacy and reducing study team burden. Learn how the TIN can help you.
Date: Wednesday, June 16
Time: 12:00 – 1:00 pm

NCATS Translational Science Online Course

Translation Science is the process of turning observations in the laboratory, clinic and community into interventions that improve the health of individuals and the public. This summer the National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS) is offering a seven-week course (June 14 – July 30), called MEDI 501 Principles of Preclinical Translational Science. Learn key principles of translational science, taught by way of a case study of a highly successful translational research partnership that produced a promising potential drug that is now being examined in clinical trials. Register now!

World Universities Network: Early Career Researcher Networking

World Universities Network (which includes the University of Rochester) is holding a series of free virtual networking workshops for early career researchers under the theme, “developing the next generation of research leaders for sustainable development.” The workshops will bring together early-career researchers from all around the world who are interested in establishing connections with colleagues in their field. Questions can be directed to webinar@wun.ac.uk.
  • Tuesday, June 8, 7:00-8:30 am: Gender Equality, featuring Bineta Diop, special envoy of the chairperson of the African Union Commission on Women, Peace and Security
  • Tuesday, June 15, 7:00-8:30 am: Decent Work and Economic Growth, featuring Romina Boarini, director of the Centre for Well-Being, Inclusion, Sustainability and Equal Opportunity at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development  and Oliver Chinganya, director of the African Centre for Statistics at the UN Economic Commission for Africa
  • Tuesday, June 22, 4:00-5:30 pm: Life on Land, featuring Jane Goodall, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace

Roc Health Data: Poverty in Later Life

The inability to meet basic needs among older adults is hidden and rarely acknowledged even though a significant number of older adults in Rochester are living in poverty. Among older Rochester city residents living below the poverty level, 39 percent are Hispanic/Latino, 20 percent are Black and only 11 percent identify as white and not Hispanic/Latino. Learn more from an interactive map from the UR CTSI's RocHealthData showing the percent of older Rochester-area residents living below the poverty level by census tract and race/ethnicity.

AAMC Community Engagement Toolkits

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) produces an annual series of Community Engagement Toolkits providing community perspectives on crucial issues. This year, the AAMC Collaborative for Health Equity: Act, Research, Generate Evidence (CHARGE), gathered perspectives from community members from across the U.S. regarding trust, COVID and clinical trial participation to develop 10 Principles of Trustworthiness. The principles integrate local perspectives with established precepts of community engagement to guide health care, public health, and other organizations as they work to demonstrate they are worthy of trust.
