Predictions are this could be another above-normal season and officials encourage citizens and businesses to get ready now with essentials including masks, water, non-perishable foods, medicines, flash lights, personal documents, batteries, charging stations, generators and exit plans so they can weather any storm. The Return of the Annual Missouri City Juneteenth Celebration

Local families and visitors can look forward to an exciting calendar of events for the 2021 Missouri City Juneteenth Celebration Foundation (MCJCF) annual celebration. The festivities will begin on June 11 and continue through June 19.

Juneteenth is a word combination of “June” and “nineteenth,” the month and day the enslaved people found out about their freedom in the State of Texas. It is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in most states dating back to 1865 when the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed on Galveston, Texas with great news that the war had ended and those enslaved were now free.

“The MCJCF was established to bring scholarships and support to the community,” said the organization’s Founder and Chairman Don Smith who is a former District B Councilmember.  “The MCJCF has brought positive attention to African-Americans in the Missouri City/Fort Bend area by recognizing leaders within the community for their great service,” he said.

This year’s full list of events include:

  • VIP Reception –  June 11 @ 6 p.m. | B’s Wine Bar
  • MCJCF Scholarship Golf Tournament – June 14 @ 8 a.m. | Quail Valley Golf Course
  • Community Service Awards Gala – June 17 @ 6 p.m. | City Centre at Quail Valley
  • Family Night Out (Movie in the Park) – June 18 @ dusk | Hunters Glen Park
  • “One Mile of Smiles” Parade – June 19 @ 7 p.m. | Along Texas Parkway
