Speak up this week on the future of Shared Spaces and the Great Walkway


As San Francisco moves out of the pandemic, the fate of two of the pandemic’s positive outcomes will be discussed at hearings this week.

Today, Monday June 7th, the Board of Supervisors’ Transportation and Land Use committee will discuss legislation to make the Shared Spaces program permanent.

Shared spaces include the hundreds of commercial parklets constructed in curbside parking spaces during the pandemic, as well as regular temporary street closures to create more space for physically-distanced movement. This Thursday, June 10th, the SFMTA Board of Directors and Recreation and Parks Commission will hold a joint public hearing on the future of the Great Highway.

Since April 2020, the Great Highway between Lincoln and Sloat has been transformed into a public commons, allowing San Franciscans to safely recreate and enjoy the waterfront.
