Devereux Meadow Project

Envisioning a New Urban Park

Project Overview

The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is currently in the planning and design phase for a proposed new urban park located on a 14-acre site north of downtown Raleigh. The current site, located on the west boundary of the Mordecai CAC at the corner of Capital Boulevard and Peace Street, is the former location of the Devereux Meadow baseball park.

The vision for the park may include:

  • Passive open areas and walking paths
  • Environmental and historical interpretation
  • Natural stormwater treatment areas
  • Daylighting and restoration of Pigeon House Branch
  • A greenway connection from Crabtree Creek Greenway to Downtown Raleigh

On Thursday, May 6, 2021, a virtual public open house was held for the proposed Devereux Meadow Park project. A recording of the meeting is available for public viewing on the City of Raleigh YouTube channel.

A separate video of the history of the Devereux Meadow Park site is also available for viewing.

Public Input Survey

The city would like to hear from you about the proposed Devereux Meadow Park. After you have viewed the open house video OR attended the MCAC presentation on June 8, you are invited to participate in a survey to indicate your thoughts on the current concept plans for the future park.

Mordecai CAC Presentation

Gary Claiborne, Capital Projects Manager for Devereux Meadow, will be our featured speaker at the Mordecai CAC meeting on June 8.  Gary will give an overview of the park plans and follow up on some of the information discussed at the May 6 open house, especially topics that will impact our community.  If you missed the open house, this will be a great way go learn about the project and ask questions!

What is going on with the Mordecai CAC?

The Mordecai CAC is now the Mordecai Community Action Coalition.  We are a coalition of multiple neighborhoods working together to provide ways for citizens to share information, meet each other, and take action in our community.

The current MCAC boundaries include several downtown neighborhoods (not just Mordecai Place). Our neighborhoods are varied, and include historic homes built in the 1800's up to brand new homes still under construction. There are also several townhome and condominium developments, as well as apartments and rental  communities. The Mordecai CAC is located just north of downtown Raleigh.

Mordecai Community neighborhoods:

  • Capital Park
  • East Mordecai
  • Mordecai Place
  • North Person/Blount
  • Oakdale
  • Oakdale at Mordecai
  • Oakwood (to Boundary St.)
  • The Cotton Mill
  • The Village of Pilot Mill

The MCAC also includes the Person Street business district, Seaboard Station, William Peace University, Halifax Community Center, Mordecai Historic Park, the site of the future Devereux Meadow Park, and more!

The MCAC Leadership team is open and welcomes any resident of the Mordecai Community. Our core group of 15-20 neighbors communicates regularly to plan meetings and share ideas for citizen engagement. We'd love to have more neighbors get involved. Email chair@mordecaicac.org for info.  All residents are welcome to join.

Upcoming MCAC events:

  • June 8 - MCAC Meeting
  • June 19 - Children and Family Day at the Raleigh City Farm
  • July 4 - Family Parade (details TBA)
  • August 3 - National Night Out (details TBA)
  • September 14 - MCAC Meeting
  • September 26 -  Mordecai Picnic!

Mordecai Historic Preservation Committee

Many people in the community were sad to witness the the demolition of 1325 Sycamore Street and the subsequent removal of multiple large trees from the lots.  Built in 1924, this home was in the Mordecai Place Historic District, and in the NCOD. It will be replaced by three new houses.

The destruction of this house has prompted neighbors to form the Mordecai Historic Preservation Committee to investigate options for future historic preservation in the Mordecai Place neighborhood. Look for updates at the June 8 Mordecai CAC meeting and a public information session this summer.

Neighbors, to get involved with the committee please email chair@mordecaicac.org.

MCAC Meetings/Minutes
