Comms from the Commmodore

We have seen a busy start to the season and it's good to see so many of you back at the club and a very warm welcome to all our new members.

We have just run our second members' survey, so our thanks to all of you who completed the survey.  If you didn't manage to complete the survey, please do contact me with any feedback or ideas you may have that we should be considering.

Although we are working our way through the results, I wanted to share some initial highlights .

An astonishing 99% would recommend our club to family and friends, and in the words of one member, "Papercourt is a fantastic sailing club, run by talented and dedicated volunteers, who extend a warm and encouraging welcome to new members. Thank you for all the amazing work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure everything runs so smoothly! "

We will share fuller details in future newsletters, but a number of you mentioned your interest in getting more involved in the running of the club. We are always in need of more people to step forward so if this is you, please email me so we can talk further. Currently, we are looking for someone to support our marketing activities and members to join our social committee, and the House committee are always happy for people to lend a hand.

One early opportunity is to help out at our Open Day. We already have over 200 people registered for the day and there is a list of duties you can sign up for at the club.  See below for more information.

Ladies Sailing last time and Monday 7th June

On Monday 24th May, we had a special additional ladies sailing evening to coincide with the World sailing promotion and celebration of Women in Sailing. There was a fantastic turnout of female sailors, with a mix of experienced sailors and novices, past lady captains and members of committees.

We were greeted by torrential rain, cold weather and thunder, which sadly has been typical of May 2021, followed by no wind! However, spirits weren’t dampened and 8 boats took to the water. A pleasant drift up and down the lake was followed by very black clouds and a wet time packing the boats up. Fortunately we missed the significant downdrafts from the clouds which threatened the flatten us all. Thank you to the amazing helpers who assisted with rigging, launching and recovery, and manning the safety boat. Those who chose not to venture onto the water took full advantage of the opportunity to be able to gather and socialise in the clubhouse and increase the profits for the bar. Thank you to Nigel for opening this for us.
A delicious BBQ was prepared by some of the social committee and ably cooked by Clive White, albeit inside the clubhouse due to the rain. The timing was brought forward as a result of the weather, which only served to improve the ambience in the club. After the food, Jenny Snow said a few words about the evening and mentioned some of Papercourts’ notable female sailors.
Overall, it was a wonderful evening which helped to celebrate the joy of sailing and the many women participating in our sport. A huge thank you to everyone who made it possible and to all the ladies who came along.

To continue our enthusiasm, and for anyone who missed out, we have our next ladies sailing evening THIS MONDAY June 7th, so please come and join us. The weather is now more like summer, so hopefully we won’t need a wetsuit, and let’s make the most of our exclusive use of the lake. The club will be open from 6pm with on the water sailing from 6.30pm, and a small BBQ (outside) following the sailing. Club boats are available on a first come first served basis and helpers  will be there to assist with rigging, launching etc. We are still subject to Covid rules so are not yet able to take people out for a sail, but hopefully this will be possible from July.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to seeing you on Monday.

Sailing Programme

Team Race Day
On Saturday 12th June there will be no club racing as Royal Grammar School (RGS) are hosting the Annual Team Race Day.  This is open to all PSC members but you will need to pre-register, either as a team of 6 or an individual, with James Witts -  jcw@rgsg.co.uk by Tuesday 8th June in order that teams and allocations can be sorted out prior to the day.  Racing starts at 9 am and all racing will be in identical Fireflies, which are provided.    Open to all ages, and if you have not done team racing before, don't worry there will be a full briefing on the day.  There will be limited cruising in the afternoon at the Southern end of the lake.

Late Summer Programme
The Sailing Committee met recently to decide on the late summer programme, which will be effective from 26th June, subject to various planned Covid restrictions being lifted.  However in simple terms, on Saturday afternoons, we will run a pursuit and GH race after the Novice races  which start at 1pm.  Sundays will see three GH races in the morning with a further two in the afternoon and the sprint races will move to Wednesday evenings.  Full details of dates and times will be in the next newsletter.

Bio Diversity
You may have noticed we trimmed back the bramble on the banks just outside by the driveway.  Earlier in the year we added more indigenous meadow and wildflower seed that is especially attractive to bees and other wildlife, thereby increasing the bio-diversity.  Not only that but it looks really great – slow up as you drive in or out and enjoy.  Picture below

Weed
Talking of things that grow; over the past 10 days we have seen the pondweed re-occur.  As with every year it is different once again – this year it has come in much latter and is a different species now being, Sago Pondweed (Stuckenia pectinatus)
which is much stringier and less dense than the previous weeds, which were Canadian Pondweed (Elodea) and the Curly Leaf Pondweed (Potamogeton crispus)

Weedasaurus has been serviced, launched and our contractors are busy cutting.  However, the slight downside of cutting is that bits do break off and float away so regular clearing of you dagger board/centre plate or safety boat prop  will keep you going faster.  Our contractors will do everything necessary to keep on top of it and ensure good sailing.

Launch and Lunch
Is back this week on Tuesday morning.

Open Day 2021 - Saturday 26th June
Providing Lockdown reopening goes as planned, we are holding our ever popular Open Day on 26th June.  Tell all your friends and family, and get them to pre-register on the website
https://www.papercourt-sc.org.uk/event/4746/.  We will be offering taster sails to those who can show a negative lateral flow test.

But we need lots of help on the day.  Please join those who have already signed up to help by filling in the chart on the clubroom door, or email Mike Hall on mdehall@me.com - we can't do it without you.
If you would like some posters or flyers for your workplace/school/gym, please contact Jerry on jeremy.sumeray@btinternet.com   Posts on your local facebook sites are helpful too.

Summer Party - Sunday 18th July from 3.30pm

To celebrate the end of lockdown restrictions we are planning a Summer Party.  We would like the whole club to join together to enjoy our wonderful club.  There will be Fun Family Races for all ages on the water, and cruising.  There will be games on the lawn for the energetic or for the not so energetic the bar will be open, and there will be a barbeque from 5pm.   Details of booking coming soon so keep looking out in the newsletters, and put the date in your diary.

and talking of Bar opening..........................................

The Bar has Re-opened

Mine Host Nigel Mills has been working away behind the scenes to revamp the bar, and you will notice the fab mural, and the even more fab fact that the bar is now open.  Nigel will open the bar as often as he can on Sunday lunchtimes, Wednesday Evenings, and also on Saturday lunchtimes.  Serving a variety of beers both alcholic and non-alcholic, wines, soft drinks etc.
Bring along your own tankard to keep behind the bar if you like.

Nigel cannot be there all the time, but any member is welcome to open the bar once Nigel has shown you the ropes.  Contact Nigel on mills.nigel@gmail.com
