BE's hive
215 children
In this last week, with the evidence of 215 murdered children in a mass grave at a residential school in Kamloops Canada, the evidence of what so many Indigenous peoples already knew, coming to light, people feel overwhelmed by the horrors that flood the news... not knowing what to do. But maybe it is not 'what we do' right now, because there is nothing to 'fix'.
It reminds me of something my grandma taught me and I daily practice. She said: "Every day, chose a person who you are not very comfortable with (someone who looks, lives or moves 'different' than you). Take their shoes and slip them on for a bit, feel what it feels like to walk in their shoes.
When we face inconceivable injustice, we tend to disassociate, not to feel the horrors. Catch yourself though, because you might have the option to disassociate, while none of our Indigenous friends can, they have no escape from the horrors.
When we disassociate, unimaginable injustice can continue to happen, because we don't feel it. As long as we don't feel it, we continue to support systems that abuse 'others'. We live as uninvited visitors on the unceded territories of Turtle Island, and with everything we do in our lives, we uphold the abusive systems that wreck Indigenous communities and our planet.
Grieving needs space.... Indigenous people need space to grieve... but in the presence of injustice, there is no space to grieve, and then the pain becomes unbearable....

So if you want to 'do' something, do what my grandma taught me, chose one pair of these 215 pairs of shoes, and feel what it feels like.
Close your eyes and imagine whose shoes you wear.
Close your eyes... imagine that child.... and feel....
Deeply feel ... feel devastated,
refuse to disassociate, stay with it...
cry your heart out,
grief deeply...
let all your unprocessed grief come up
there is a lot, because
we have not learned to grieve
so start to
feel feel feel.... let it in and let it out
We cannot fix this
But we can chose who we are, being present
Feel, grieve, and give space to grieve
Respect the space to grieve
Only when we feel each other and our collective grief,
we can acknowledge each other,
and come together as humans

ANNOUNCEMENT
On the 1st SEPTEMBER 2021, the price of Alinkers will increase
As much as you don't like it, we don't like it, but we need to increase our price. As we explained in this previous newsletter, the situation in the world of supply chains and manufacturing has changed dramatically as a result of the pandemic.

We have kept the price the same for you, and we have stretched it till the 1st September 2021, but we have to face it, it has changed everything.
We are probably looking at an increase of USD$200
(the bike industry implements 10-25% LINK)
Until the 1st September
take advantage of the current USD$1977
We will post the international price increases
and new rent to own amounts well in advance.

Teri at work
Professor at Stanford
As a Professor of Biomedical Data Science & Medicine at Stanford University, I often am required to split my time between my lab, my office and various buildings for meetings or teaching across some 8,180 acres for which the campus is located. The campus features more than 49 miles of roads which while beautiful, is extremely challenging to navigate for someone with significant mobility issues. In what used to take me 30 minutes to walk with crutches, I can now get to in less than 10 minutes. In addition, because of the specific design of the Alinker, I am able to safely move while holding conversations with students, faculty or staff while walking. (I am big at multi-tasking.) The ability to walk into a lecture hall and have a place that I can also “rest” while lecturing is a huge. I also have the ability to roll right up to my desk which I can easily adjust if I find the need to rest on the Alinker. This has helped me minimize the pain and swelling in my knees as I find that I am not struggling to get up and down off of a chair as I don’t seem to stay in one position for too long.
And then there is the travel side of the coin. For the past 3 years (pre-pandemic), I turned down multiple invited seminars and keynote lectures given the difficulties I have with navigating airports, traveling on my own and the need to move around conference centers, hotels or unknown cities. The Alinker provides me the opportunity to share my critical research findings and participate in meetings (for example) at the National Institutes of Health in the US. I co-organize the Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing, now in its 27th year and this will be the first time in 3 years that I will be easily able to run the conference in Hawaii and not suffer going from my hotel room to the conference lectures.
I am delighted to say that on June 9th I will be participating at a critical meeting at Stanford in person. While I am attaching a couple pictures of me on the Alinker (one of which was taken at outside the Stanford outpatient medical building), I’d be happy to have someone snap a picture of me (and some of my staff or better yet - my department chair) on June 9th if that would be useful.
And lastly, because of you and the Alinker, I have submitted a grant proposal for a million US dollars that looks at combining the use of pharmacogenomics, the Alinker and knee replacements. In addition, in collaboration with the one the leading joint replacement surgeons at Stanford University, we are in the process of designing a clinical trial using the Alinker for joint replacement patients as we believe that use of the Alinker will lead to better outcomes (and better wellness as you like to say) that the current standard of care.
The Alinker has been THE game changer for me: physically, emotionally, and life.
