Happy Birthday to Us
View this email in your browser
Good Afternoon Dear Customers

June is the best month for opening a drinks shop - we opened the doors at Bath Street on June the 1st, and here at 105 West Nile Street it was the 8th, June the 8th 2015 to be precise.

We thought this was a good excuse to look back at a few things that we've sold here since day one, and to match them up with some of our latest additions  - a way to show off the changes in wine we've seen over the last six years, and to remind you of the stalwarts that are too good to ever leave our shelves.

So read on, enjoy, and Happy Birthday To Us!

Cheers

The Good Spirits Co. Wine & Beer

CHAMPAGNE

Our range spans the best of the Grandes Marques all the way to the most modern, low intervention, no sulphur producers.

Billecart-Salmon Brut Réserve (£49.50, 75cl/12%)
An enduring staff favourite, this was one of the wines poured to mark the opening of the shop back in 2015.

Moutard Blanc De Noirs Brut Nature (£48, 75cl/12%)
We like Moutard so much that we import it by the pallet-load. This is their bone dry, zero dosage, no added sulphur, 100% Pinot Noir.

FIZZ

Not every day's a Champagne day. Fortunately, other fizzes are available.

Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut 2019 (£16.30, 75cl/12%)
In South Africa it's called Méthode Cap Classique. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with a touch of Meunier, second fermentation in the bottle, and disgorged so that it's pin-bright. Made in Stellenbosch rather than Champagne, but does exactly the same job, and does it very well indeed.

Orsogna Pet Nat Malvasia Brut Nature (£18.20, 75cl/12.5%)
Ok, here we have (deep breath) an orange, biodynamic, no added sulphites, brut nature Malvasia. They're ticking so many boxes that they've labelled it as both Pét Nat AND Ancestrale (same thing, innit). Mainly, all you need to know is it's lightly sparkling, with some interesting spicy tannins, and lots and lots of deliciousness.

CLASSY WHITES

We're all suckers for the classic whites of Burgundy or the Rhine, but we also have room in our hearts for slightly less well know regions and varieties.

Fournier Longchamps 'La Croix Picot' Savennières 2016 (£20.40, 75cl/13.5%)
Not as well known as it really ought to be - Savennières produces some of the most fascinating, long lived, dry Chenin Blancs in the world.

Laibach Chein Blanc Sur Lie 2019 (£17, 75cl, 13.5%)
Fermented in a mixture of old barrels, steel tanks, and concrete eggs, this is a complex wine with just a suggestion of orange character to it. New Wave South Africa at its best.

BOLD REDS

Alongside a range of enduring favourites from Rioja, Bordeaux, and Tuscany, we've also got some great reds from further afield.

San Marzano 'Anniversario 62' Primitivo di Manduria Riserva 2017 (£27, 75cl/14.5%)
The heel of Italy gets pretty hot in the summer, and the Primitivo grape variety gratefully accepts that heat and gives us the makings of huge, full bodied, velvety reds like this beaut. Never knowingly off our shelves.

Chateau Musar 2000 (£36, 75cl/13.5%)
A more recent addition to our range, Musar is a legend of the wine world. But for all its legendary status, still much more affordable than most of the classics.

SPAIN

Spain is important to us and claims a lot of shelf space, but it's far more than just Rioja and Sherry (although you can of course go a very long way on just those two). So here, for your delectation, are two NOT Riojas.

Cal Pla Priorat Crianza 2016 (£16, 75cl/15%)
The unlikely looking Priorat vineyards, hacked out of steep slatey hillsides, give us rich, ripe, silky reds like this, and for that we are very, very grateful. Delicious.

Orly Lumbreras 'Milagritos Blanco' 2019 (£22, 75cl/13%)
Go read what Orly has to say about his farming and winemaking, sip a glass of this, and rejoice that the world of wine has room for such a character and such a wine.

BEER

What started as a single beer fridge in our Bath Street shop has grown into Glasgow's best and widest range of bottles and cans.

Duchesse de Bourgogne £3.50, 33cl/6.2%)
A Belgian classic (and with a great label too).

Rodenbach Grand Cru (£3.70, 33cl/6%)
Well deserving of the 'Grand Cru' tag (even if it is unofficial), this is one of the world's enduringly great sour beers.

Vault City Honeyberry & Strawberry Sour (£6.90, 37.5cl/7.3%)
With a tight focus on fruited sours, Vault City have quickly built up a huge following, with each release vanishing off our shelves in jig time.

Overtone Sabrosa (£5.90, 44cl/8%)
A double dry hopped Double IPA (DDHDIPA, if you will) from the Partick Brewing Wunderkind.

CIDER

We're big cider enthusiasts at the Good Spirits Co. (one of us works a week at the harvest every year) and we've been very excited by the changes and innovations in the cider scene over the past few years.

Ross-on-Wye Suzie-Wong Medium Sweet (£3.50, 50cl/5.9%)
A very traditional (dare we say old-fashioned) medium sweet still cider made at the incredible Broome Farm, home to more than one hundred different apple and pear varieties. We've been proud to stock this for as long as we've had cider in the shop.

Little Pomona 'Do It Puritan' Perry 2019 (£12.30, 75cl/7.3%)
Little Pomona have led the way in transforming the UK cider scene, with their Do It Puritan bottlings representing the most experimental flavours and styles. This edition is a Pét Nat style perry with just a little bit of funk.
