President Silvio writes. . .
Dear Fellow Rotarians and Friends,
I encourage all members to respond to the invitation to our club’s annual changeover dinner at the Roseville Golf Club on Tuesday, 6th July, 2021. It will be a grand occasion on the handing-over of the ‘Chain-of-Office’ to President Elect Lalitha Warren.
The evening will commence at 6.15pm with Piano interlude by Selina Ye and Daniel Li with proceedings commencing at 7.00pm. It will be a memorable occasion not to be missed!
Ben Lee, “The UN’s work in Crisis Situations”, speaker at meeting of June 1, 2021.
Ben Lee is an Australian lawyer working in human rights.  In recent years, Ben has worked with the United Nations as an investigator and an advisor. He's served with the UN’s Missions in Afghanistan and Iraq, with the UN’s Independent Commission of Inquiry on Syria, and with UN country offices in Cambodia, most recently in Myanmar.
His presentation was as; he stressed, his personal view on and not an official view from the UN. He shared with us observations and experiences which were both informative and eye-opening.
As a young Australian experiencing first hand international conflict situations, he was confronted with many stressful situations which he reports back to the UN to assist with conflict resolution.
Ben skilfully answered the many probing questions our members asked of him about the United Nations organization, which presently has 193 members states.
Ben’s Godmother PE Lalitha Warren, thanked Ben on behalf of the club for his outstanding address.
Our virtual speaker this week was Sally Hetherington, a Sydneysider who was 25 when she bought herself a one-way ticket to Siem Reap, Cambodia, to assist in a foreign-volunteer program. Sally witnessed the unintended consequences of such programs which can create inequality. She teamed up with the local Human & Hope Association; at the time an English school, to help develop it into a thriving community centre. Sally mentored and trained the local staff to be able to step back and have the centre run entirely by a team of Khmer employees. Back in Australia Sally focuses on raising funds for Human & Hope to continue their poverty alleviating programs. These include pre-schooling for underprivileged children, language programs in both English and Khmer, student development programs as well as sewing classes for women to improves their standard of living and numerous outreach community programs.
Rotarian Craig Brodey, who has visited Cambodia previously, thanked Sally on behalf of the members for her passionate and informative talk.
