We will be deciding what our next project should be!  Do join us to help make it something that's useful to you!

Consultation Now Open on Proposed New Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in East Oxford

Exciting plans for the three new Low Traffic Neighbourhoods are progressing.  The funding is coming from the Active Travel grants from government, and the aim is to make it easier, safer, and healthier for people to walk and cycle.

Everyone in the three areas should now have had a leaflet through their door, inviting them to give their opinion of the schemes in an online consultation which will be open from tomorrow until 29th June.  We encourage everyone to have their say; it has been observed that people who are against these schemes get heard, people who don't mind don't say so and people who love them aren't as loud as the ones who hate them!  It would be great if the consultation could more accurately reflect local views, and the best way to do that is if everyone takes part.

The plans involve using traffic filters made from planters or bollards, which allow bikes and pedestrians through.  All this will stop through traffic, while all residents who drive will be able to get about, with a few route changes.  The Emergency Services, Refuse Collection, and Disability Forum have all been consulted in drawing up the plans.  The council predicts that congestion on the main roads will initially increase, but it will be monitored and is expected to decrease over time, presumably as more people choose active travel or public transport.

For Donnington Ward, the new local Green Councillor Lucy Pegg is hosting a Zoom meeting tomorrow at 7pm to 'bring people into the conversation'. The meeting ID is 973 1072 1081, and you can email Lucy if you have any questions: cllrlpegg@oxford.gov.uk

Here is the link for the consultation:  oxfordshire.gov.uk/eastoxfordLTN.  Let’s create a resounding shout of support for active travel and less pollution in East Oxford!

Event: How close are we to a One-Planet Oxfordshire?

In 2018, One Planet Oxfordshire brought together local councils, organisations, businesses, schools and community groups to create a ‘shared vision’ for a better, more sustainable future. They worked with Bioregional's sustainability framework, called One Planet Living.

On 10th June, as the end of the funded program approaches, they invite you to hear about the progress that's been made over the past three years, and what the next steps might be.

The event is free and online, 10-11.30am. If you can't make the live presentation then you can still register and you will be sent a recording.

Astonishingly, 'the food we eat in Oxfordshire makes up 43% of our ecological footprint'. (Source: Moore 2019, Oxfordshire Ecological Footprinting Study for Bioregional.)

By choosing a plant-based lunch on 14th June, and beyond, we can help to slow climate change, conserve precious natural resources, and improve our health.

Event: Climate and Our Water Supply

On Weds 7th July at 8pm, Watlington Climate Action Group is running a free online event called What’s Happening with Water?: Climate and Our Water Supply - How to Make a Difference.  Andrew Tucker of Thames Water will address questions such as: Is water supply really an issue?  What challenges do we face? What can we do about them?

CAG Collaborate Groups

CAG Oxfordshire organises several working groups on the subjects of waste, energy, surplus food, growing, trees and rewilding, plastics, and climate action with children. They welcome members of community action groups and aim to provide the opportunity to meet up, share knowledge, and find ways of working together.

This page explains everything about these Collaborate groups: https://cagoxfordshire.org.uk/collaborate-groups/

The Energy Collaborate group has recently restarted and will be meeting on 15th July to talk about electric vehicles.

If you're interested in getting on board and representing LCEO at any of these Collaborate meetings, then get in touch at together@lceo.org.uk.

Home Energy Saving Mini Projects #3: Eco-Educational TV for preschoolers

This month's project is truly mini, and it's one for families with mini members!  To help reduce our homes' impact on the environment, we can educate the young ones!

There is a great program for preschoolers on the BBC iPlayer called Maddie, The Home, and You which explains low carbon living in easy-to-understand terms.  It's set in the lovely Findhorn eco village in Scotland and covers a vast range of topics, including insulation, batch cooking, food miles, mechanical heat recovery ventilation, and lots more!  It's a great conversation starter, and it's fun too.

That's it for now!

That's it for this month's newsletter. If you'd like to see something included in next month's newsletter or have an idea for a campaign we could run in east Oxford, send us an email to comms@lceo.org.uk - we'd love to hear from you.

Best wishes,
The Low Carbon East Oxford Team
