So long, Maryem

Our beloved Maryem has run off back to Switzerland in search of new adventures! She will be hugely missed by us all, but we're confident there are many great things on the horizon for her.

She added a slice of glamour to the PRSC, with a fabulous new outfit for each day she was here. This huge sense of individualism and flair came bursting out of every ceramic creation she made for us. Showing true depth of skill, her range of unique ware (available below, get them while you can!) is an explosion of all things Maryem: classic, classy and colourful, but all with a huge sense of fun and adventure.

"I am happy I got to work with fun people for three years, you made my time here and my leaving party (!) very memorable. I was always treated as a valuable and equal team member and friend, and not looked down for my young age. Also I was always able to say what I wished to do, as it was important for everyone to be happy in their doings. I never imagined I'd spend my working days decorating china, let alone making a whole ceramic table top. The PRSC is a place where everyone is welcome, and I'll surely come back to visit soon :) "

Happy (official) Birthday Queenie!

This Saturday is the Queen's Official Birthday, celebrated in the UK by Trooping the Colour and announcing a list of people deemed 'honourable'. Kinda wish we got a bank holiday instead, like many Commonwealth countries enjoy!

To mark this special occasion, the moment you've all been waiting for... a brand new edition of our ever popular I Eat Swans mug, fresh from the kiln!

Also presenting How the Other Half Lives - Royal memorabilia like you've never seen it before! All or nothing, it's a cheeky comment on the growing divide between rich and poor. Choose from a teapot, a large tankard or this unusual oval dish.

Colston (Dis)continued

Into the harbour, now into a museum

Dredged up from the bottom of Bristol Harbour, the toppled statue of slave trader Edward Colston now lies on display in the M Shed. Although we're now marking a year since the statue went down, Bristolians were protesting against the adulation of Colston long before last summer; Bristol Radical History Group offer up an expanded timeline of events, and have some thoughts to share about what is - or more specifically what isn't - included in the M Shed display. Meanwhile David Olusoga puts things into a historical context with his Guardian opinion piece, and some self-proclaimed statue saviours try to block-book all the tickets to M Shed so that nobody can see the statue. Ignore them, the M Shed are allowing walk-ups where possible so go see it for yourself.

As extinction crises become an increased focus of contemporary environmental conversations, creative projects that engage with stories of loss have emerged as a visible fixture of the cultural and creative landscape. Opt out of the government sharing your health data

Matt Hancock is slyly trying to sell all our health data again. This time they've increased the amount of data they're seeking, and will potentially allow identifiable information to go out - Full Fact point out the distinction between pseudonymising and anonymising. Even medical professionals are shocked by this data grab. If you want to stop your GP data leaving your GP practice for purposes other than your direct care, you can find instructions for opting out here - but you need to do so by June 23!

Are you an unpaid carer?

Throughout the pandemic unpaid carers played an essential role supporting older, disabled and seriously ill relatives and friends. This Carers Week (7 to 13 June) anyone who looks after someone is encouraged to get a Carers Assessment.

All carers are entitled to a Carers Assessment on an annual basis. It is a chance for you to talk openly about the impact caring has on your life. It will give you space to think about how caring affects your physical and mental wellbeing and how this may change in the future. It’s the first step towards making sure you get the practical, financial and emotional support you need.

To find out more about how to access an assessment or a review, contact CarersLine, call: 0117 965 2200 or email: CarersLine@carerssupportcentre.org.uk

Stop Gambling Adverts

The council has already banned gambling advertising from Bristol's streets and buses, but the team behind this new poster campaign want to take that nationwide.

"We are not being evangelical about banning gambling, but feel if tobacco advertising has been so successfully banned (with people still continuing to smoke), surely the same could apply to gambling adverstisments".
