For the past decade, the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) system has been undergoing an aggressive transformation to modernize its facilities and set the strategic direction for 21st century public library services in the District of Columbia. DCPL’s physical campus includes 25 neighborhood libraries and the newly modernized Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial (Central) Library.

The Library Program Coordinator works with staff throughout the Library, vendors and outside organizations to implement programs and services that have system wide value and leads the library in a specialized subject area, reporting directly to a department head, director, or manager.

DCPL is seeking a Library Program Coordinator (Assistive Technology) in the Center for Accessibility Department at the Martin Luther King (MLK) library. Under supervision of the department manager, the Library Program Coordinator works with vendors, staff and other  stakeholders to efficiently build on and improve assistive technology services.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evaluates the assistive technology needs of patrons with disabilities.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with external partners and agencies including Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind, National Federation of the Blind, American Foundation for the Blind, University Legal Services, Disability Rights DC and others.
  • Plans, develops, and conducts program analysis of substantial scale and impact concerning all aspects operating programs.
  • Develops, maintains, and monitors project, and integrated reporting system(s) affecting program(s) throughout the activity including maintaining adaptive hardware and software and troubleshoots issues as they arise to ensure proper functioning.
  • Communicates information to supervisor for effective evaluation of program operations and milestones.
  • Maintains an inventory of installed AT software, hardware specifications and recommendations of upgrades, new technologies, and supplies.
  • Analyzes, extracts, summarizes, and identifies significant trends and issues related to assistive technology. Forecasts and estimates program requirements and prepares programmatic reports, justifications, and costs.
  • Provides instruction on the operation of adaptive hardware and software for DC Public Library staff and patrons.
  • Creates and provides training to staff and external audiences on various types of assistive technology, accessibility, and disability culture.
  • Coordinates and presents professional development (DPD) for librarians, educators and adult learners and develops cross-departmental programming that focuses on the interests of people with disabilities.
  • Review documents for accessibility needs under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and in accordance with WCAG. Creates accessible documents.
