Happy Pride Month!

It's June and we all know what that means... Pride Month!

I hope that everybody is having a wonderful month so far — we asked people on Instagram how they were celebrating this month and we had responses about enjoying queer films and books, making time to hang out with fellow LGBTQ+ friends and family and indulging in some self-care. So however you're celebrating, I hope that it's fabulous and makes your heart smile!

Calling Bi Groups!

The National LGBT Partnership, in collaboration with the LGBT NHS England Health Team, are conducting research on bi* people’s health and experiences of healthcare.

We would like to invite workers and volunteers from bi organisations and groups to attend a virtual roundtable on Tuesday 22nd June, 1pm-3pm. This will be a space to share your observations of common health and wellbeing issues within the bi community.

To register your interest, please email laura@consortium.lgbt

*Please note that for the purposes of this research, we are using ‘bisexual’ as an umberella term to include anybody with a non-monoseuxal identity, including those who identify as biromantic, pansexual, queer, etc.

LGB Alliance Appeal

Trans young people's charity Mermaids are appealing the Charity Commission's decision to register controversial group, the LGB Alliance, as a charity in England and Wales. This move is supported by the Good Law Project, Gendered Intelligence, TransActual and members of the National LGBT Partnership, LGBT Foundation and Consortium.

The Charity Commission has faced backlash since it registered the LGB Alliance as a charity in April this year.

Mermaids' crowdfunder has already raised over £60,000 and is nearly at it's stretch target of £65,000. Comments of donators include:
  • "Funding love, not hate."
  • "Freedom of speech ≠ freedom of consequences. Hate speech will not be tolerated and will never have a place in our community."
  • "Trans rights are human rights."

Age UK Report Launch

Public Health England (PHE) and Age UK are pleased to be hosting a webinar on Thursday 17 June 2021, to launch the joint report on ageing in coastal and rural communities. This explores the inequalities older men, older people from ethnic minorities, and older LGBTQ+ people can experience in these communities.

The study builds on PHE’s evidence summary of health inequalities in older populations in coastal and rural areas. While it focuses on coastal and rural communities, the findings are relevant to those working in other settings: in particular the rural fringes of urban areas, areas with smaller ethnic minority communities and tourist areas.

The webinar will take place on Thursday 17 June 2021 from 10:00 – 11:30. This will be an opportunity to understand the issues affecting older people in these three groups, and to identify how place-based action can be taken to address the causes of health inequalities that they face. Attendees will have the opportunity to put questions to the presenters and researchers.

PHE Cervical Screening Guidance

Public Health England (PHE) have recently released guidance for those who feel anxious or uncomfortable attending a cervical screening. This guidance covers a number of important reasons that people may be anxious to attend such an appointment — sexual trauma, mental health, being a survivor of FGM — but makes no mention of trans and non-binary people who may face barriers to accessing this type of care.

In response to this guidance, Stewart O'Callaghan, (Founder and Executive Director of Live Through This) has authored an open letter to PHE and is welcoming signatories. If you wish to add your name to this open letter please email contact@livethroughthis.co.uk

Sussex Rainbow Counselling Blog

Laura Clarke, the Stakeholder Engagement Officer for the National LGBT Partnership has recently been featured on Sussex Rainbow Counselling's blog with a post about the importance of LGBTQ+ inclusive healthcare. This post explores some of the common forms of discrimination that LGBTQ+ people face when accessing care, the health issues that disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ people and the ways in which healthcare workers can provide a more inclusive and informed service.

Pride in Practice LGBT Patient Experience Survey

This is the latest in a series of surveys that the LGBT Foundation have carried out since 2013. The survey is an important tool in helping to understand the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people accessing primary care — GP practices, dental practices, community pharmacies and optical practices. This year’s survey will run from Monday 17th May until 31st July 2021.

If you identify as LGBT yourself then please and fill in the survey by clicking here. All people completing the survey will have the opportunity to enter a raffle for a chance to win £200 in shopping vouchers. If you’re not LGBT, please share the information through your networks to help reach a wide range of LGBT people.

We know that certain communities such as people of colour, older people, and people of faith are often under-represented in surveys such as this. LGBT Foundation don’t believe any group is ‘hard to reach’ just that sometimes we’re not asking in the right places. If you have any suggestions for how LGBT Foundation can ensure their survey is as inclusive as possible then they'd love to hear from you. If you have any other comments questions or queries about the survey, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! You can get in contact by emailing pip@lgbt.foundation
