Hi!

FML for my nickname "Becky." But, hey, at least my name isn't Karen.

While deciding on baby names, most parents have no intention of causing their children suffering or embarrassment. But these days? We have no clue what name will always be a gift OR turn into a curse, or pejorative label.

How could parents predict that decades later in 2021, Karen would be a moniker used to describe privileged, middle-aged, rudely entitled and superior white women?

I feel for women named “Karen,” especially since restrictions are lifting, leading to prime “Karen-sightings.” For fun, I reached out to authors named Karen to give them extra love and ask how they felt about their names.

Doesn't all this make you wonder: Will your name be next?

Until then, flip your hair and flip the page!

And don’t forget to send me an email to enter re:book’s “Write Away Summer” contest where the winner is guaranteed (!!) to have their book published by a prestigious publishing house. (For real!) Learn more about the contest here.

The Stylish Reader

Many of us have reading rituals, right? A book, a place, a time, all become routine, familiar and comfortable.

Most readers seem to agree they do have “things” they like to have with them on the go, or especially while reading. Bookmarks, reading glasses, blankets, pens, etc.

In today's article, I've included my must-have accessories for readers. Check it out here

 what i’m RE:ading

A balancing act with one fiction and one non-fiction.

Waiting for a Star to Fall by Kerry Clare (Doubleday Canada) is a timely and provocative read about a politician’s aide who starts a relationship with her boss and ends up getting entangled in a #metoo scandal that promises to bring him down. An appealing plot and relatable characters lead this captivating read.

Big: Stories About Life in Plus-Sized Bodies (Caitlin Press) is a collection of personal and intimate essays written by a diverse group of plus-size women about living life in a "big" body within a society obsessed with thinness. All 26 writers reveal funny, traumatic, unexpected, and challenging insights and experiences — from discrimination, shame, fashion, and fat activism to sexuality, diet culture, food, motherhood and more.

“People say, ‘What’s your process?’ My process is allowing my soul to leave my body and enter into the body of another human being.”

— Esteemed author Francine Prose on the writing "process" — which btw, is a word she hates. Her method of writing, which she practiced when writing her latest novel The Vixen, entails a transcendental experience with her characters. (She's written 30 pieces — including novels, essays, reviews, columns, and travelogues — over the span of nearly 50 years so it may be worth a try?)

Young Adult pick of the week from Rebecca's daughter.

Emilia chooses to date the attractive, popular Ben over her friend Allistair, but when she realizes how unhappy she is, she gets the chance to go back in time to change her choice. The Do-Over (Feiwel & Friends) takes a unique approach to managing the choices we make in life and living with the outcome. It was fun to read because let's face it, who hasn’t wished for a do-over?

In The Liar by Ayelet Gundar Goshen (Little Brown and Company), Nofar is an Israeli teen living in Tel Aviv. Dreaming of escaping her boring summer job, Nofar takes advantage of an encounter, and with a terrible slip of the tongue, she lies about being raped. The boy upstairs is the only one who knows the truth — and is demanding a price for his silence. Then Nofar meets Raymonde, an elderly immigrant whose best friend has just died, and soon, Raymonde’s lies take on a life of their own. Filled with biblical parallels and symbolism, this brilliantly written book explores the treatment of victims of sexual assault and how one mistake, in today's environment, can have a thousand consequences.

For the more serious reader.

Life on the Line: Young Doctors Come of Age in a Pandemic (HarperCollins) follows six young doctors who begin their medical careers fighting COVID-19 in New York City. They were thrown into hospitals that were "the epicentres of the epicentre" of the global pandemic and needed to roll with the punches during a crisis. Think season One of Grey's Anatomy but during a pandemic.
