GHYC Newsletter No.2 - June 2021

Sailing School

New Instructors
We welcome our newly qualified Senior Instructor, Domhnall Coffey on board (seen here on the left) and look forward to a partial return to normal. We also welcome six newly qualified Advanced Instructors. This puts us in a good position for our more advanced Juniors to acquire and/or spruce up the skills necessary to achieve the ISA certification for which they have been training.

Powerboat Courses
We are now running Powerboat courses on demand as the numbers of applicants allow. Please register an interest in doing these courses by clicking this link: Powerboat course interest.

Supported Sailing
YES, YOU CAN ATTAIN YOUR ISA LEVELS WHILE DOING SUPPORTED SAILING!
GHYC is running half days of Supported Sailing for beginners and this will stand for this season. Skills attained will be signed off on towards Irish Sailing awards. We encourage all participants to log into their Checklick accounts: https://irishsailing.checklick.com/.

We now believe that we are in a position to offer full days of sailing for sailors who have attained Level 2 and have their own boat and are working towards Improving Skills and above. We have rolled this out to participants in the first week of Supported Sailing for whom there is a facility to buy the extra week of half days in EPP:  https://pay.easypaymentsplus.com/.

You should check your progress. If you have any questions regarding levels attained, contact training@glandoreyc.com and we will work through it together. If you have forgotten your login details or have any other questions, ditto. We encourage sailors and parents to pay special attention to the Logbook function within Checklick and use it to keep a note of all sailing/boating activities. You will find this on the top menu bar on the Checklick Page.

Primary Schools Programme

The first three weeks of June saw the welcome return of Primary Schools Sailing following the pandemic hiatus. The format was changed somewhat with beach picnics replacing lunch at the Glandore Inn, but the fantastic fun on the water remained unchanged. Glandore, Union Hall, Abbeystrewery and Leap attended as usual with skills being improved for some and in other cases, children who had never been in a dinghy were seen helming days later.

The 2021 Primary Schools Regatta became the David & Goliath match up that many expected with Union Hall making a clean sweep of all races despite some valiant legs sailed by other local schools.  The Union Hall team of Eolann Miles and Liam Deasy with crews Donna Woods and Kate O' Brien were veterans of several years of local Dinghy leagues. In fact, Eolann is a regular on the Dragon circuit despite his years. Fifth class pupils in attendance were immediately planning their training to wrest the trophies from Union Hall's grasp in 2022!

Three weeks of sailing and a regatta were achieved safely thanks to the dedication of a team of Club and School Volunteers, with volunteer instructors and helpers - without whom this programme couldn’t function.

Volunteers: Tim Forde, Heather Mahmood, Olivia Scarlett, John Wyles, Lee Miles, Fran Lynch, Jamie Frame, Caroline O Donovan, Jay Scarlett, Aileen O' Keeffe, Tiernan Roe, Simon Kershaw, Michael Limrick & Martin Minihane.

Instructors: Dorothy Hedderman, Tiarnan Brown, Domhnall Coffey, Peter Hayes, Emily Bergin.

Helpers: Aisling Forde, Laragh Woods, Daisy Taylor, Lily Fitzpatrick, Max Tubb, Conor Creswell, Muireann Creswell, Jess Tubb, Kaitlin Murphy, Scott Fuller, Emma Barrett, Ava Scarlett, Ben Perez and Freddie Nolan.

Plus all the other Shore Parents, Special Needs Assistants and teaching staff who played important roles, especially teacher Mr. Kieran Daly who donned wetsuit and took to the boats in what is believed to be a first for School Sailing!

Dinghy News

Despite some delays due to poor weather, the dinghies managed a few training outings in May in some wonderful conditions. Thanks, as always, to those who acted as Race Officer and provided crash boats. It was fantastic to get back on the water again!

Marconi Cup – Sat. 24th July
The BIG competition on the horizon for the Club’s Junior Dinghy sailors this season is the Marconi Cup which GHYC will host this year. Happily, this event has been rescheduled to accommodate the popular RNLI Fundraiser Swim on the following day.

The event involves teams of three boats competing in two events - the first is a relay race and the second is team racing. The crews change between the two events and the teams are scored for each event and then for an overall winner. Training has begun (Thursday evenings from 6-9PM up to July 22nd as well as on Sunday, June 27th at 2PM) but anyone who would like to take part is welcome to join the squad - training together helps us build skills across all sailors. Please contact Domhnall Coffey, Senior Instructor at the Clubhouse or Harriet on 087-6508664.

We intend to enter the maximum two teams for this competition – a total of 24 sailors - with the final choice for these made close to the event itself to allow for weather, etc. Baltimore, Crookhaven and Bantry Clubs will be bringing teams and we hope to have a great day!  As you can imagine, with up to 170 sailors involved, this event requires a very large support crew and we would welcome any offers of help for support either on or off the water (contact Harriet on 087-6508664).

Team Racing Training Courses  - July 12-16th
The Club has arranged for the Irish Sailing Fireflies (fleet of six) to visit, accompanied by a qualified team racing coach, for the week July 12-16th. These will be used to provide team race training courses, Monday to Friday of that week with two courses available - one in the mornings and one in the afternoons. Places on these courses can be booked with Kevin Percy (training@glandoreyc.com).

Participants will be assessed for the skills they acquire and, where appropriate, these will be signed off on the Irish Sailing Go Racing programme.

Dinghy Racing
When the racing calendar was initially put together, it was not clear whether we would be running afternoon courses that might make it hard to schedule evening racing on Tuesdays and Thursdays as was usual pre-Covid. It looks as if this will now be possible. It has been decided that Thursday evenings in the first three weeks of July will be used for team racing training, Tuesday evenings will be used for fleet racing training, and Sunday afternoon (fleet) racing will continue for all dinghy sailors. The programme for dinghy racing is as follows:

Funding for One!
The Junior (and other) dinghy sailors gain huge benefit from access to Club dinghies on courses, in school sailing, for team racing and for use in competition. These boats represent an important opportunity for newcomers to try out sailing as a sport and to learn and become proficient sailors.

Wear and tear on boats means that the Club needs to look at constantly renewing the dinghy fleet. While investment in new Quests to replace the aging Visions is underway, the Topaz fleet needs the same attention. The Junior sailors hope to kick off a programme of rolling funding for this with their “Funding for One” (one new boat in 2021!) involving a series of fundraising ventures this season. Your help and support would be hugely appreciated! Plans are as follows:

Online Kit Sale: The Club has collected an amount of sailing kit unclaimed for over two years now. This has been notified to members each year and we now propose to sell off what we have. This will be done via the Buy & Sell page on the Club website (it’s not easy to get a traditional Jumble Sale to comply with Covid regulations!). We will ask for donations rather than set prices and anyone interested in items should message Harriet on 087-6508664 and the item(s) will be held for collection. It’s a great way to pick up cheap kit, especially for younger sailors.

If you have any items – particularly things that your kids have grown out of- that you would like to donate to this venture, please drop them off to the Clubhouse marked as donations for “Funding for One”.

Jewellery and accessories: Our creative Junior sailors have been hard at work creating unique and very high quality sailing accessories. These include a variety of rope and shackle bracelets, charm bracelets and simple wrist wraps, as well as key rings. There is honestly something for everyone here and this will be the craze for the summer for all ages! Styles and further details will be revealed in early July.

Coffee Mornings: Parents, grandparents, friends and relatives with time on their hands (as their Junior sailors are fully occupied on the water!) will be invited for some relaxed chat and delicious home baking at coffee mornings that are planned both in July and August.

Burger Nights:  Junior sailors have had very constrained social lives over the last 15 months and the Club has access to some very professional BBQ equipment. Bring the two together and we hope to have some fun evening BBQs in the Clubhouse yard this season. Further details of these will be given to Junior Sailors via the sailing courses and the Club noticeboard – so please keep an eye out.

FINALLY, IF ANYONE TELLS YOU THEY’RE NOT GETTING THE NEWSLETTERS, PLEASE REMIND THEM TO CHECK THEIR SPAM OR FAILING THAT TO LOG INTO THEIR EPP AND UNCHECK THE 'DO NOT CONTACT' BOX.
