SUMMER LEARNING HUB IMPORTANT REMINDERS

This summer session is a period of many adjustments after a year of blended learning.  Please see the following reminders to help your child adjust to classroom learning.
  • Even if it's summer, your child still needs to have a reasonable bedtime.  Many of our students are tired, inattentive, and are falling asleep in class!
  • Be sure to provide a healthy breakfast.
  • Be sure to be on time!   Teachers begin instruction at 8:00am and if your child is tardy, they are missing important classwork instruction.

IMPORTANT! SUMMER UNIFORM PICK UP

If you were unable to pick up your online order on your designated date of June 15, you may pick up on the second available date of June 29th.  Please come to the cafeteria from 11am - 12:30pm.  Parking is available in our parking lot.  If you are unable to make the June 29th date, please email PCNC, Joanne Imada.  Please avoid calling the office or stopping by the office unannounced for this purpose.

Only a few weeks left of middle school and we will soon welcome you to Kalani High School. We ask you for your continued patience and support as we wrap up this school year along with graduation. Mr. Higa is a seasoned counselor who is funny and always looking for ways to connect with students. He will not be working in the summer but will be checking emails periodically. Amazon Smile Reminder

As summer approaches, you'll be surprised how many purchases add up as you prepare for vacations, house projects, back to school, etc.   As an example, one individual was notified that her family accumulated purchases that earned our school almost $150 during the COVID stay at home restrictions and the holidays, and, we have earned almost $6,000 since we started participating as a qualified non-profit organization.  It's fast and easy!  Just follow these step by step instructions:

  • Go to smile.amazon.com
  • Click Get Started

  • In the Search box type in: Friends of Niu Valley Intermediate

  • Click Select next to the name when it comes up

  • Now, every time you shop, go to smile.amazon.com or bookmark this page

For Amazon Mobile App:

  • For Amazon Smile... there is an extra step needed for those using the Amazon mobile app to activate Amazon Smile within the app.
  • Once activated there is no further action needed, only a re-activation every 6 months.
  • Click here for the instructions.
  • If you do not actively turn on the feature within the app, there is no 0.5% going towards the charity.

Parent Letter from Principal Laura Ahn

The attached letter provides recent Return to School updates.  Please visit our school website for up to date information.

Continuing to Keep our Roads Safe

The efforts to keep our roads safe continue with the support from the District 7 Community Policing Team (CPT) of the Honolulu Police Department (HPD), led by Corporal John Mau, and his fellow officers: Corporal Hayden Schmidt and Officer Robert Holden.  These three diligent HPD Officers, took the time and effort to patrol our pick-up area and remind drivers how to use safe driving practices to keep their child, and everyone on the road, safe from harm.

One particular unsafe observation was cars stopping in the middle of the road, not at curbside, and having their child move between parked and moving vehicles, to get to their car.  Please be sure to use the designated curbside drop-off and pick-up area.

Requests:
To avoid the back up at the curbside Auto Line, please arrive after 1:45pm when you are sure your child is there ready to get into your car.  Also, avoid parking directly across the street from the curbside Auto line.  Many students will attempt to jay walk to get to their cars, to avoid walking to the two available crosswalks.

Corporal John Mau will be visiting our school throughout the remainder of the school year to keep our roads safe for everyone!

Please be aware of the entrance to the Auxiliary Parking lot on Halemaumau.  This lot is available only to NVMS faculty and staff.  Do not block this entrance or use this lot to drop off your child.  It is a small area and cannot accommodate too many cars entering or exiting at the same time.

The Custom Company Uniform Orders

For the remainder of the school year, The Custom Company will once again be making periodic deliveries, usually on a Wednesday about once a month,  to NVMS.  You will be notified by email when your order is delivered.  We are planning to have one or two deliveries with scheduled pick-up dates, during the summer.  Details to follow in May.

Friends of Niu Valley (FNV) Executive Board Treasurer Position

If you are interested in being a part of our parent organization, the Friends of Niu Valley (FNV) executive board, please email PCNC Joanne Imada for more information.  FNV will be in need of a Treasurer for SY 2021-22.   Our current Treasurer's child will be moving on to high school next year.  Fortunately, our current President, Shonni Stevens, previously held this position and will be able to provide some guidance.

Principal Laura Ahn, Teacher Liaison Gwen Lee, and PCNC Joanne Imada attends all meetings. Meetings are open to any parent and are held once a month in the evening for about an hour, or as needed.  This past year, all meetings were held virtually on the second Wednesday of the month from 6:30pm - 7:30pm.  If you are interested in attending, please email PCNC Joanne Imada.

MAHALO TO HPD!

A big Mahalo goes out to Officer John Mau from the District 7 Community Policing Team (CPT) of the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) for his support in keeping our students and community safe!   Officer Mau led the sign waving effort, along with Principal Laura Ahn, Vice Principals, Counselors, teachers and students, on the Friday before Spring Break.

This was a gentle reminder to everyone using our roads to drive with safety and for pedestrians to use crosswalks at all times.   With our 8th Graders now attending school twice a week, there will be an increase in cars and students at pick up time.  To reduce the back up at Auto Line, please arrive after 1:45pm when you are sure your child is there ready to get into your car.

Officer Mau will be visiting our school throughout the remainder of the school year to keep our roads safe for everyone!

Traffic Alert:  Student Safety First

Please be aware of the following road safety reminders:
1.  When dropping off your children, please pull forward to allow space for everyone to safely drop off at the curb.
2.  Please follow traffic laws!   When you make a U-turn in the middle of Halemaumau Street, this is a traffic violation and  is considered breaking the law.
3.  When picking up your child(ren), please model safety, and pick up your child at the curb.  We have already experienced one close encounter with a student walking between cars to get to their own car that was waiting for them in the middle of the street.
4.  Remind your children to always use the crosswalk.

Please, let's all be safe!

Message from our NVMS Counselors

Niu Valley students have completed a series of Choose Love reintegration lessons in advisory that were focused on the growth mindset and bringing students back together after the extended school closure.  With their advisory classes, students are beginning the Courage Unit from the Choose Love Program.  (In order to access the material, you will need to set up an account.  The process requires an email and takes just a few minutes.) The Courage unit is focused on managing our thoughts, learning about the brain, and neuroplasticity, with the goal that students learn that it can take courage to make the right decision.  "Choosing love means having the courage to be grateful when life isn’t easy, to forgive when the person who hurt you isn’t sorry, and to step outside your own pain to help someone else. That’s the way to choose love, and the empowering lesson is that it’s a choice."

We encourage you to follow the lesson topics and familiarize yourself with some of the foundational concepts of the Choose Love Movement, including the formula.  There are online lessons, practices and discussions for families to utilize.  Please reach out to your grade level counselor if you have any questions.

Reminder to 7th Grade Families

If you haven't done so already, please be sure to have a physical completed for your 7th Grade child.  Attached is the physical form that needs to be completed by your physician and submitted to our school office.   For more information on this state law, please visit this DOE website.

Additional Updates from Principal Laura Ahn

  • Reopening of school video - please view this video link for important information on health and safety measures we are taking for the reopening of school in August.
  • Water bottles -  All water fountain spigots will be covered to protect our students from using them. With funds from our "We Love Niu Valley" fundraising campaign, we purchased four new water filling stations throughout the school. All students must bring a water bottle from home to fill up in order to drink water throughout the day.
  • We are asking every household to fill out this parent survey to help us with further planning for the new school year.  It should take you less than 5 minutes to complete. There have been many inquiries about 100%  Distance Learning offerings, Please indicate in this survey if you are interested so we may contact you.

Updates from Principal Laura Ahn

  • Mailouts:  I hope you all received a letter in the mail from NVMS that included school campus reopening information. Please see attached, or visit our website for a copy of the letter, FAQs and schedules, or come to the office to pick up information if you did not receive it.  An upcoming blast will be sent home the week before school starts with information on "what does my child do at home on the first day of school?"
  • Face Coverings:  All students, except those with documented medical concerns, are required to wear a face mask to school and as they move around campus.  Once in the classroom, seated in their 6 foot, socially distanced area, they may remove their face mask as appropriate to drink water and when they need to be heard.  Although it is difficult for students to wear a face mask all day, we are encouraging parents to practice this safety precaution now so students will be more accustomed to wearing a mask for longer periods of time when school starts.
  • Infinite Campus: We are concerned that parents of 7th and 8th graders may not know how to access Infinite Campus to check their child's schedule so we created instructions on how to sign in.  Visit our school website under "Students" or click  (Infinite Campus Portal and Infinite Campus Instructions).
  • Health and Safety Video:  Please view this video for additional clarification of the safety precautions being taken at NVMS.

Hawaii DOE Guidance for Reopening Schools
