Consulate General of the Netherlands in San Francisco

Dear reader,

California has re-opened, and the consulate is back on the road. We’ve made great connections online in the past year, and now we can finally build a deeper relationship. I can’t wait to meet you all in person.

Last week the consulate traveled to Los Angeles for a Pop-Up Consulate. We renewed almost 200 passports and connected to businesses, organizations, and government. The Netherlands and Los Angeles have a  friendship that has been strengthened with this visit

Together with the Legion of Honor Museum, we organized a discussion revolving around the “Black in Rembrandt’s Time” exhibition to highlight te history of black people living in the Netherlands in the 17th century, a chapter of Dutch history that has too often been overlooked.

As here in the US, the Netherlands is discussing its past. Our country has seen its own Black Lives Matter protests, which sparked public debate about our history of Black people and the position of race in our country today. That’s why we find it important to host events like this, because it’s through understanding that we can improve ourselves and our society.

I wish you a great summer, one in which you can finally go out and see your loved ones without too many worries. Hopefully we’ll see you this fall for in-person visits, trade missions, and networking events.

All the best,

Dirk Janssen
Consul General in San Francisco

Popup Consulate Los Angeles
The Pop-Up Consulate was back in Los Angeles. The team traveled to LA to renew passports of Dutch nationals and connect to companies, organizations, and government.

Consul General Dirk Janssen: "This Pop-Up Consulate comes at an important moment. During the pandemic we were able to invest in our relations with Los Angeles virtually, and now we can finally meet them in real life and see the sites where the Netherlands and LA can work together. By being here, we reconfirm the strong bond between the Netherlands and LA."
LA is going through a massive transformation ahead of the Olympics in 2028, bringing many opportunities for Dutch companies. The economic team visited the  Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI), learned more about the homeless crisis from the Sheltersuit Foundation, connected over the circular economy with Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium, and biked along the redeveloped LA River with LA River Works and Alta Planning + Design. Other meetings included Culver City, Port of Los Angeles, and the Getty Museum.

The economic team visited the Regional Recycled Water Advanced Purification Center in Carson. Together with local policy makers, they discussed the main water challenges in the LA region. One of their goals is to source 70% of the water locally by 2035, other challenges are pollutants, storm water management and aging infrastructure. The Netherlands and LA will continue to collaborate on the topic of water, to share expertise and best practices.

The consular team set up shop at the Netherlands Business Support Office to renew passports of almost 200 Dutch nationals who live in the Los Angeles area. Because of the Pop-Up Consulate flexible consular services, Dutch nationals don’t have to travel to San Francisco to renew their passport, saving a lot of time and costs.
Pledge of Friendship

During the Pop-Up Consulate, Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Nina Hachigian received a Pledge of Friendship from Consul General Dirk Janssen. The pledge marks the strong relationship, the achievements, and ambitions of the friendship between the Netherlands and the City of Los Angeles.

Consul General Janssen: “The Netherlands and Los Angeles are on the same page when it comes to sustainability, urban planning, smart mobility, and international trade. In the past years, we’ve intensified our relations and this Pledge of Friendship is a sign of how strong our friendship has become. I’m looking forward to continue working together, from creating the most sustainable Olympic Games, to the redevelopment of the LA River; and from high-tech innovation on Silicon Beach to circular construction in Culver City. Dutch innovation and LA business spirit go hand in hand.”

Black in Rembrandt's Time

Together with the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco, we hosted “Black in Rembrandt’s Time: Dutch and American Perspectives,” to bring together two voices, unique perspectives, and their parallel investigations into the representation of Black models in 17th century Dutch Art.

Last year, The Rembrandt House in Amsterdam was home to the exhibition “Black in Rembrandt’s Time,” which tells the story of Black people in the Netherlands in the 17th century. It’s about their place in society in Rembrandt’s neighborhood and in art. The curated portraits of Black people are unlike the ones you’ve seen before, no nothing like the depiction of Black people that would follow in the centuries after. The exhibition comes with a mini documentary that the embassy network translated to English.

In the event, Rembrandt House curator Stephanie Archangel and Yétundé Olagbaju, an artist and maker based in Oakland, discussed their contemporary approach to this theme from two different critical – and geographic – perspectives.

FrieslandCampina joins Holland in the Valley

Dutch dairy company FrieslandCampina joined the Dutch ecosystem in Silicon Valley as Holland in the Valley’s latest corporate partner. The story of FrieslandCampina started in 1871 when 20 farmers in the Hollandse Wieringerwaard region joined forces in local cooperative dairy factories.

Fast forward to 2021: the company now has branches in 38 countries, exports to 100+ countries and had a revenue of EUR 11+ billion in 2020. We’re looking forward to connecting your team to Silicon Valley, Aniruddha Kusurkar and Lianne Dingemanse.

War Mobilization Cross
A special ceremony at the consulate. The son of Henri van Gerrevink received the posthumously awarded War Mobilization Cross for his father. Henri fought in the former Dutch Indies and died as a prisoner of war. His two kids, Evert and Lydia, live on the US West Coast.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands is  grateful to your father, Henri van Gerrevink, and all other soldiers, sailors, and airmen who gave the greatest sacrifice – their lives – defending our values and fighting for their country
