Our City has a vibrant collection of volunteer groups that help our community to be prepared for disasters and emergencies.  One of these groups is NART (Neighborhood Amateur Radio Team).  These community volunteers coordinate with the ham stations in City Hall and PVE Police Department Mobile Command Unit.  Together, these communications vehicles act as a back-up Emergency Operations Center if City Hall and traditional communication methods via phones and cell service become unavailable.

Amateur radio came into being after radio waves were adapted into a communication system in the 1890s by the Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi. In the late 19th century, there had been amateur wired telegraphers setting up their own interconnected telegraphic systems. Over the years, ham radio operators have heard distress calls from the Titanic and been a part of communications through major world events.

Our PVE NART team keeps their skills honed by having a weekly call.  During that time, they not only get to practice communications, but they also get to connect as friends and colleagues over the air waves.

NART is a Part of our PVE PD Volunteer Teams

NART has been a volunteer arm of the PVE Police Department for a number of years and perform communication services to support our City’s emergency preparedness program.  They work in conjunction with the PVE PD in case of a disaster, helping with communications across the City and coordinating with the PVE PD central command.

NART has a team of over 40 volunteers throughout PVE, RPV, RHE and Redondo Beach which have logged many hours in 2020 by doing their weekly check-in calls. This year they will log more hours as they continue their check-in calls, complete a disaster drill and participate in the upcoming Disaster Preparedness Mini Fairs.

The NART team is always looking for more volunteers to add to this exciting community.  To find out more about NART and ham radio operations, contact Marcelle Herrera  or go to the NART website.  Also, plan on attending the PVE Disaster Preparedness Mini Fair near your home to see the team in action and ask more questions.

NART is part of our city-wide team that helps make our neighborhoods safe.  We appreciate their willingness to serve our community.
