JULY 2021

NEWSLETTER

Dear <<First Name>>,

As we look forward to celebrating Women’s Day on 9 August 2021, we are cognisant of the vital role that women play in the South African workplace and economy. It is of great concern to see the negative impact the pandemic has had on gender equality in the workplace - putting it back by 10 years. As an association we commit to supporting employee assistance practitioners and professional members who we know, in turn, work hard to support female employees in the workplace. The health of our economy depends upon it.

This month we bring you an article that examines EAP’s role in combating domestic violence and we unpack what disability inclusion in the workplace looks like.

We ask the question, “Does sexual harassment in the workplace increase the risk of suicide?” as well as taking a look at career planning for the new normal.

As always we value and look forward to you getting in touch with us.  We are always keen to know what you enjoy most and what would you like to read more about in your EAPA-SA newsletter?

EAPs role in Combating Domestic Violence

At its core, domestic violence is about one individual exercising power and control over another. It is defined as when one person is being harmed by another person while they are in a domestic relationship. Signs of domestic violence in an employee, co-worker, or colleague can sometimes be obvious. However, with the rise in remote working, these signs may become more difficult to detect, particularly if the victimised employee actively seeks to conceal the effects of the abuse. During the COVID-19 crisis, an abuser may use one of your employee’s remote work situation as an opportunity to tighten control over his or her victim. >>>

Disability Inclusion at Work

South Africa has about 3 million people living with disabilities, equating to about 7.5% of the country's population. Will 2021 be the year that disability inclusion finally takes hold in the workplace? Today, more companies understand the value of meeting their employees’ needs – they have seen the benefits of broader employee accommodation, and it’s taken weathering the pandemic for the lesson to hit home. COVID-19 has brought the issue of individual needs and disabilities out into the open so that an increasing number of employees feel that asking for support is a safer conversation to have with their employer. People with and without disabilities have started to have higher expectations around accommodations and inclusion. >>>

Does Sexual Harassment Raise the Risk of Suicide?

While sexual harassment under any circumstances can wreak havoc on a victim's health and wellbeing, workplace harassment is a special kind of menace. It is like a cancer that works its way through a work environment causing disastrous results. Employees who are being sexually harassed at work talk of having feelings of dread when commuting to work, suffering from anxiety, panic attacks, random fits of crying as well as physical manifestations of stress such as hair loss, shingles, weight gain or loss, sleeplessness and exhaustion. >>>

Career Planning for the New Normal

Today’s world of work is more unpredictable than ever before. Many people have had their hard-fought career advancement come to a standstill because of unpredictable external forces, including organisation and industry disruptions brought about by COVID-19. According to a Survey of Business Uncertainty (SBU) conducted by the University of Chicago. Four in ten jobs may never return after the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. How does one plan one’s career in readiness for the new normal? >>>
