OFF THE PAGE: DESIGN, ILLUSTRATION AND AUTHORSHIP IN CONTEMPORARY COMICS

Want to know how comic artists and illustrators dream up their characters? Join 4A as we host a Zoom panel featuring Jin Hien Lau, Meg O’Shea and W. Chew Chan, this Saturday 3 July, 12pm (AEST).

Moderated by 4A Curatorial Program Manager Con Gerakaris, the panel will use Jin Hien Lau’s work, Train of Thought from our current exhibition, Acute Actions: Responses to I Am Not A Virus (Part 2) as the launching point for a discussion on visual storytelling and writing, and how comics function as a unique medium. These concepts will be examined through topics including page design and panel layouts and how comics artists break borders and colour outside the lines in service of the narrative. Register to attend.

YOUR SUPPORT HELPS US GROW

As a not-for-profit organisation, 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art relies on the support of our community and friends to enable us to champion contemporary Asian art and culture through ground-breaking exhibitions, professional development programs and educational outreach in Australia and the wider Asia region.

With the end of financial year around the corner, we invite you to consider donating to 4A. Your generosity will help us continue our commitment to elevate the voices of Asian Australian artists and invest in important global cultural dialogues in 2021 and beyond.

Since 1996, 4A has remained committed to championing contemporary Asian art and culture. As the only small-to-medium arts organisation with Climate Active certification in NSW, we are champions of climate responsibility. The 4A team is currently working offsite while our Haymarket gallery undergoes temporary renovation to fully restore and climate-control our 127-year old heritage listed building.

Donate to 4A and help us install professional gallery lighting, as well as new paint and chemical disposal facilities. These implementations will allow us to deliver transformative and ambitious programs while maintaining our environmental responsibilities and reducing our energy use by up to 70%.

All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible. I
n Chinese culture, '8' is a lucky number in Chinese culture, so donate with an '8' for good luck! :)

UPCOMING EXHIBITION
DRAWN BY STONES

Presented by 4A in partnership with Counihan Gallery In Brunswick, Drawn by stones brings together artists who utilise the ceramic medium to interrogate contested histories, stolen land, Indigenous sovereignty, and concepts of national identity. Exhibiting artists from Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan investigate the creation of a sense of ‘nationhood’ and ownership through ceramics and demonstrate how the ceramic form can both memorialise and tell alternative histories.

Taking its title from Marvin Bell’s 1984 poem Drawn by Stones, by Earth, by Things That Have Been in the Fire, this exhibition recognises that the foundations of ceramic practice lie in the earth – and through the work of exhibiting artists, aims to expand the relevance of ceramic histories, dialogues and interrogations of land, place, sovereignty and ownership across Asia and Australia. Visit our website for more info.
