Welcome back to the LVRG!

Which Christie book did you choose last month? Did the Queen of Crime confound you, or did your little grey cells solve the mystery?

This month, in honour of a recent discovery (see below!) we're going on an adventure in Ancient Rome!
There are some fabulous book series set in the time period including Jack Ludlow, Adrian Goldsworthy, Conn Iggulden, or you could read about the Romans from another point of view with the Boudica series, by Manda Scott.

Available for free on CloudLibrary and BorrowBox!
Sydney Gardens' Roman Remains

Archaeologists have excavated a rare find in the park, revealing a stone 'coffin' with the preserved remains of two people.

The casket is carved from Bath limestone and also contained what is thought to be a votive offering, as well as small red and blue glass beads.

The placement of the casket suggests a Pagan burial and evidence of a cremation was found nearby, the only one ever found in the Bathwick area. These offers a fascinating glimpse into funerary practices 2,000 years ago.

The option of having the sarcophagus on display in The Temple of Minerva in the Botanical Gardens is being discussed.

You can find out more about these exciting finds on the Bath Council Newsroom, here.
Health Talk

Health Talk is a fantastic resource where hundreds of people have shared their experiences of what it's like to have a health condition, such as breast cancer or arthritis, on film.

You can search for a condition or illness and hear from real people with real life experiences discussing symptoms and treatments.

Visit www.healthtalk.org to find out more. You can also watch Author Michael Rosen discussing his experience of long Covid here.

Volunteer with Bath Festivals

Two volunteer production assistants are needed to help with the smooth running of the festival in the run up to the finale weekend. If you, or any one you know is interested, download the description below for more information and contact details!

Good News!

We're pleased to say that we are starting the process of having volunteers back in our buildings and in Home Library Service Roles!

Whilst we are being mindful of inviting people back slowly, and only in roles that we are sure can be kept socially-distanced and safe, it feels like a big step back to 'normal'! We wanted to take this opportunity to take you through the steps involved in getting back to volunteering with us, so you know what to expect.

The first thing to say is that if you feel unable to take up the role you previously performed, we understand. A lot has changed in the past year and your personal circumstances may mean you would prefer a different role or to step back from volunteering with us. If you want to discuss it, want more information or have any questions, do please email us at Library_Volunteers@bathnes.gov.uk so we can have a chat.

When we feel a role is safe to continue we'll contact you asking if you want to resume volunteering, if you do we have a list of items to go through to ensure the risk is minimal and you'll enjoy yourself! These can be done in person, on the phone or via video conferencing, whichever is best for you.
  • Risk Assessment - based on the role and location. If the assessment indicates a slightly higher risk, there is a second assessment we will undertake. The nature of the current situation means we may be discussing personal information about your health, but be assured these are always kept confidential.
  • Checking your ID badge and DBS are up to date (DBS checks depend on the role - but it will be the same checks as when you were recruited)
  • One-to-One with your manager/volunteer coordinator. These are informal chats to make sure you are happy and feel safe to volunteer, and to see if you'd like to make any changes to your role or feedback anything to us.
  • Personal Protective Equipment. We will go through all necessary PPE procedures with you to make sure you fully understand and are comfortable with them, and arrange to provide any equipment for you.
Once these are done we can agree a timetable for you to restart! If either you or we feel the risk is too high, or you aren't comfortable restarting yet, just let us know and we will wait until you are ready.

Again, if you have any questions, queries or comments, just email us at Library_Volunteers@bathnes.gov.uk!
Thank you!

Thank you all so much; from those who have been able to take up a new role with us, to those who have kept in touch.

We hope to see you soon!

Best wishes,
The B&NES Library Team.
