Homily by Bekezela Mguni, the guest speaker.  Music by Kris Rust, Vocal Music Director. 

Bekezela Mguni is a queer Trinidadian artist, radical librarian, community organizer, and educator. She holds an MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh. Bekezela is a Boom Concepts studio member, a community space and gallery dedicated to the development of artists and creative entrepreneurs. She is currently an artist in residence at Artist Image Resource, focusing on screen printing, collage, and experimental design. Bekezela also serves as the Education Program Director at Dreams of Hope, which affirms the voices and leadership of LGBTQ youth through the arts.

When and How Will Our Church Building Re-Open?

The Re-Opening Implementation Working Group (RIWG) invites you to a Town Hall meeting this Sunday to hear the latest about our plans to reopen, ask questions, and contribute your thoughts, hopes, and concerns about re-opening our church building.

We want to know what you think! What should our priorities be as we formulate a re-opening plan? What concerns do you have about re-opening? First, we will give a brief overview of our decision-making process, followed by a Q&A session to do our best to answer your questions.

Established by the Board of Trustees at its May meeting, the RIWG is working with the Safe Reopening Task Force, the Building and Grounds Committee and other stakeholders to develop a plan to re-open the church building will report back to the Board with proposed concrete steps for doing so. Members of the Working Group are Board members Kyle Gracey, Julie Downs, Kate Snow, Eleanor Mayfield, and incoming Board member Bob Mitchell.

One question that has already come up is: After in-person Sunday services resume, will we still be able to watch live-streamed services on YouTube on Sunday mornings? The answer is Yes! We plan for “multi-platform operations” (also known as hybrid): a flexible combination of in-person and online engagement.

COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic at the Church Wednesday, July 7 and Wednesday, Aug 4 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
COVID-19 vaccination clinic at our church 
The Allegheny County Health Department will hold a COVID-19 vaccination clinic at our church on Wednesday, July 7, and Wednesday, Aug 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The clinic will offer the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine to people aged 18 and over and the two-dose Pfizer vaccine to those aged 12 to 17.

The clinic will be open to the general public. Appointments are not required; however, online pre-registration will be available.

More details about the clinic will be provided as soon as they are available.

If you are a member or friend of First Unitarian who needs transportation or other logistical help to attend the clinic, please contact the Reopening Implementation Working Group at reopening@first-unitarian-pgh.org.

Brief Report of Motions Passed at June's Board of Trustees Meeting
The Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees met via Zoom on Wednesday, June 16, 2021. Rob Schwartz, Bob Mitchell, and Peggy Parsons joined as guests.

The email vote of June 5, to authorize Scott Smith to sign an agreement with Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority to replace the church-owned portion of the water line on Morewood should it be deemed to be a lead line was moved by Scott Smith, seconded by Kyle Gracey, and ratified unanimously.

Kyle Gracey moved to appoint Ebe Emmons as a General Assembly delegate. Julie Downs seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Transition Support Task Force for Rev. Kate

Got a question for Rev. Kate?
Some information you think she might need from your group? Please contact a member of the Transition Support Task Force with your concern.

As you might guess, the purpose of the Transition Support Task Force is to assist Rev. Kate with any matter related to her transition to our church. The task force also serves as a conduit for questions and information for Rev. Kate from the broader church community. Since Rev. Kate will be extremely busy this summer winding up her ministry in Virginia and making the move to Pittsburgh, it's important that she relies on a small, centralized group of people for assistance and does not have to respond to individual inquiries.

The Transition Support Task Force members are Mary Denison, Julie Downs, Stephanie Pawlowski, and Jim Reitz. Rev. Connie will also provide transition assistance to Rev. Kate. Their contact information is in Breeze, the church directory.

Do You Need Help With Getting Vaccinated? Can You Help Another Church Member Get Vaccinated?
COVID-19 vaccination

Are you a member or friend of First Unitarian who needs practical help with getting vaccinated, or do you have questions about the vaccines? If so, please let the Re-opening Implementation Working Group know by emailing us at reopening@first-unitarian-pgh.org. Please tell us what your problem or concern is. We’ll do our best to match you up with a fellow church member or friend who can help.

On the other hand, if you are fully vaccinated and willing to help another church member or friend who’s facing barriers to getting vaccinated, please let us know who you are and what kind of help you can offer. Please email us at reopening@first-unitarian-pgh.org.

 
EECM Shelter Meals July, August & September
 
EECM Shelter on the first Sunday of every month
As you know, First Unitarian Church provides the Sunday Night dinner for the EECM Shelter on the first Sunday of every month.  Our next three dinners are:

Sunday, July 4th
Sunday, August 1st
Sunday, September 5th


Suppose you would like to be the coordinator for any of the upcoming months. It seems to work quite well to have a point person organize the menu and contributions and contact EECM.
Second, If you would prefer to contribute by preparing foods, please let me know which months you are available, and I will connect you with the coordinator.
Finally, I understand that we are still preparing meals in our homes and dropping them off at EECM.  I will let you know when this changes.
Finally, if there are any friends, family, neighbors, or colleagues who you think might be interested in helping,  and especially if they are looking for a way to be introduced to our church and one of our service projects, please feel free to invite them to participate.  If you share their names with me, I will reach out to them and explain more about our Sunday Night Shelter Dinner Program.

Update on PIIN (PA Interfaith Impact Network)
PIIN 

 The PIIN Board (representatives of all the member congregations) meets on the second Thursday of each month, 7-8:30 p.m. If you would like to attend to find out more about PIIN, please contact Karen Burns Rutigliano or Sandy Woolley.

The recent Board meeting included the following:

  •   A celebration of PIIN’s work with the Alliance for Police Accountability (APA) to help pass two ballot initiatives in the recent primary: 1) Banning No-Knock Warrants in the City of Pittsburgh, and 2) Limiting the use of Solitary Confinement in the Allegheny County Jail. Voters overwhelmingly approved both measures.
  •   PIIN is kicking off an EXPO (Ex-Incarcerated People Organizing) program to assist “returning citizens” with housing, career development, internships, expungement of records, and voting rights. The goal is to empower them to help themselves and others in their community.
  •   Save the Date - PIIN’s annual banquet will be Sunday, August 29, 6-7:00 p.m. The banquet will be virtual again this year. PIIN’s justice work and how you can help will be highlighted.

Countering Political Polarization Greater Pittsburgh Workshops
This Summer and Fall 2021 All Via Zoom and Free of Charge Registration information below. Our country has become increasingly polarized over political issues. These FREE workshops will teach you strategies for both listening and speaking with people who have differing political opinions without trying to change anyone's mind. You will learn and practice skills for having respectful conversations that clarify differences, search for common ground, and affirm the importance of meaningful dialogue.

Since we waited a long time to Celebrate Reverend Kate and a 1UU/Habitat work party, let's rejoice!!
We can help a neighbor on Braddock Avenue have a new safe and energy-efficient home.
As we work for Habitat, we gain satisfaction!  Reverend Kate offers us new interpretations from the pulpit!
There are so many reasons to Celebrate.
We are going to have a work party for many reasons - all building for the future.

During these trying times, members of the church may occasionally need a helping hand. The Pastoral Care Team asks you to identify ways you may be able to assist. We expect you would be called only a few times during the year. Please contact a member of the team if you are able to help. 

You’ll be asked to indicate which of these you may be able to help with from time to time:

Children and Youth Religious Education 
A d20 RPG experience!
Your gaming enthusiast LRED, Erica Shadowsong, is looking for an adventurous group of test players to join a summer campaign!  Testament is a campaign setting that allows players to experience the mythology and cultures from the Biblical time period.  Magic, mystery, combat, fantasy, and multicultural history come together to put the players in the world of the Bible!  Rather than a religious perspective, however, the setting explores all of the cultures and mythologies presented from a literary and historical standpoint, allowing players to have a great variety of character choices to play and experience.  

The game will begin and run through August and may continue longer if we decide we want to Times and days will be decided by participant availability.  Players do not need to purchase anything, as they will have pre-made characters to choose from, and we will use Discord or another program to roll dice.  (However, if you have your own polyhedral dice you want to use, you are welcome too!)  This is open to anyone grades 4 - 7th who really wants to do it.  We will need 3 players minimum to run the game and will cap it at 8 participants total.  If you think you may be interested or would like to know more, more information is coming, as well as signup, so watch this space!  However, you can also reach out to me via email, eshadowsong@first-unitarian-pgh.org if you have questions or want to let me know of your interest early.  As long as there are slots available, you have until July 29th to sign up.

Racial Justice Task Force Meetings
The First Unitarian Racial Justice Task Force meets on the third Sunday of every month from 3:00 - 5:00 pm ET via Zoom. Women's Alliance

Women's Alliance Update
This summer June, July, and August and we will meet by Zoom on the first Thursdays of each month to socialize. We hope to meet in person and outdoors on August 5th. Currently, we are researching locations.

Women’s Alliance meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of each month from September through May. Since March 2020, we have met by Zoom. We have a business meeting at 10:30 a.m., and a unique program of guest speakers from 11:00 a.m.— 12 p.m. on the first Thursday. On the third Thursday, after a business meeting, we check in with one another with a specific theme.

The Men's Group does not have regular monthly meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month during June, July, and August.    For many years, with the exception of last year, outdoor activities and excursions have been planned (such as hikes, lawn bowling, Bocci, boat rides, etc.).  That process is now underway.  Look for email notices.  If you are NOT on the men's group email list, please contact Jim Reitz at j5650r@comcast.net.   Monthly meetings - probably on zoom  -  will resume in September.

Central East Region's BIPOC gathering
If you identify as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color (BIPOC), you're invited to join us for the Central East Region's BIPOC gathering happening on two Mondays of the month at 6:30 pm ET. In our gatherings, we are joined by lay folks of color, lay leaders of color, and/or religious professionals of color to be in the community. Our conversations focus on topics like wellness and resilience and our goal is to center BIPOC experiences and create space to explore our UU experiences. The deadline for submissions for the Chalice Weekly Newsletter is Tuesday for the week’s Thursday publication. Please submit your items through the church website at https://www.first-unitarian-pgh.org/blog/submit-an-article/

The “Chalice Weekly Newsletter” is organized around the four areas of our mission, with each of the areas featured on a rotating basis:

Inspire (first week of the month, with the month’s Sunday service topics, minister’s column, and news from the Inspire Council)

Learn (second week of the month, with lifespan religious education news, religious educator’s column, and news from the Learn Council)

Connect (third week of the month, with news about connections-related activities such as Covenant Groups, and other news from the Connections Council)

Serve (fourth week of the month, with news about social justice and service-related activities such as Green Sanctuary and Habitat for Humanity, and other news from the Serve Council)
