Prayer of the Day

Holy God, giver and sustainer of life
and healer of our hurting world,
you reach out to us with grace,
calling us to get up and follow you.
Give us the faith that makes us whole,
so that dying and rising with Christ
we might partake of the great feast
of abundant and everlasting life;
through Jesus Christ our Savior.

Order of Worship for the Lord’s Day
Gathering
Prelude
Call to Worship
     Leader:       Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the lands!
     People:      Serve the Lord with gladness!
     Leader:       Come into God’s presence with singing!
     People:      Enter the courts of the Lord with praise!
     Leader:       Let us worship the Lord, our God.
*Hymn #268       Crown Him with Many Crowns        diademata

            Crown Him with many crowns,
            The Lamb upon His throne;
            Hark! how the heav’nly anthem drowns
            All music but its own!
            Awake, my soul, and sing
            Of Him who died for thee,
            And hail Him as thy matchless King
            Through all eternity.

            Crown Him the Lord of Love:
            Behold His hands and side;
            Rich wounds yet visible above
            In beauty glorified:
            No angel in the sky
            Can fully bear that sight,
            But downward bends his burning eye
            At mysteries so bright.

            Crown Him the Lord of peace,
            Whose power a scepter sways
            From pole to pole, that wars may cease,
            And all be prayer and praise.
            His reign shall know no end,
            And round His pierced feet
            Fair flowers of glory now extend

            Their fragrance ever sweet.

            Crown Him the Lord of years,
            The Potentate of time.
            Creator of the rolling spheres,
            Ineffably sublime.
            All hail, Redeemer, hail!
            For Thou hast died for me;
            Thy praise shall never, never fail
            Throughout eternity.

God calls us to Confession and Forgiveness
Call to Confession
            Ours is a God of justice,
            waiting to be gracious to us,
            yearning to have pity on us.
            Blessed are all who wait upon the Lord.
            In penitence and faith,
            let us confess our sins to Almighty God.
Confession of Sin
            Almighty God, who sent a star
            to guide people to the holy child Jesus,
            we confess that we have not followed
            the light of your word.
            We have not searched for signs
            of your love in the world,
            or trusted Good News to be good.
            We have failed to praise your Son’s birth,
            and broken his peace on earth.
            We have expected little, and hoped for less.
            Forgive our doubt, and renew us in all godly desires,             that we may watch and wait and once more
            hear the glad story of our Savior,
            Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen
(Pause for silent reflection.)
Declaration of Forgiveness
            The God of Love became one of us
            that he might die as we die.
            He remained God that he might come back to life.
            He became incarnate in human flesh
            that we might know forgiveness and live in peace.
            Hear the Good News: in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.             Our sins are forgotten, our hope secure. Hallelujah!
*Response                        Gloria Patri                      gloria patri
Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, amen.
*The Peace                                                  See John 20:19, 21, 26
(We will pass the peace in place.  You may turn to extend your wishes to those nearby.)
Since God has forgiven us in Christ,
let us forgive one another.
The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
And also with you.

Prayer for Illumination
Scripture Reading                                                 II Samuel 1:17-27
              David intoned this lamentation over Saul
            and his son Jonathan.
            (He ordered that The Song of the Bow
            be taught to the people of Judah;
            it is written in the Book of Jashar.) He said:
            Your glory, O Israel, lies slain upon your high places!
            How the mighty have fallen!
            Tell it not in Gath,
            proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon;
            or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,
            the daughters of the uncircumcised will exult.
            You mountains of Gilboa,
            let there be no dew or rain upon you,
            nor bounteous fields!
            For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,
            the shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more.
            From the blood of the slain,
            from the fat of the mighty,
            the bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
            nor the sword of Saul return empty.
            Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!
            In life and in death they were not divided;
            they were swifter than eagles,
            they were stronger than lions.

            O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
            who clothed you with crimson, in luxury,
            who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.
            How the mighty have fallen
            in the midst of the battle!
            Jonathan lies slain upon your high places.
            I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
            greatly beloved were you to me;
            your love to me was wonderful,
            passing the love of women.
            How the mighty have fallen,
            and the weapons of war perished!
Scripture Reading                                           II Corinthians 8:7-15
            Now as you excel in everything—
            in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness,             and in our love for you --so we want you to excel also
            in this generous undertaking.
          I do not say this as a command,
            but I am testing the genuineness of your love
            against the earnestness of others.
            For you know the generous act
            of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich,
            yet for your sakes he became poor,
            so that by his poverty you might become rich.
            And in this matter I am giving my advice:
            it is appropriate for you who began last year
            not only to do something
            but even to desire to do something—
            now finish doing it,
            so that your eagerness may be matched
            by completing it according to your means.
            For if the eagerness is there,
            the gift is acceptable according to what one has—
            not according to what one does not have.
            I do not mean that there should be relief for others
            and pressure on you,
            but it is a question of a fair balance
            between your present abundance and their need,
            so that their abundance may be for your need,
            in order that there may be a fair balance.
            As it is written,
            “The one who had much did not have too much,
            and the one who had little did not have too little.”
Sermon                     Giving                        Rev. Mike Riggins
Response                                                    From the Confession of 1967
            God’s reconciling act in Jesus Christ is a mystery             which the Scriptures describe in various ways.
            It is called the sacrifice of a lamb,
            a shepherd’s life given for his sheep,
            atonement by a priest;
            again it is ransom of a slave, payment of debt,      vicarious satisfaction of a legal penalty,
            and victory over the powers of evil.
            These are expressions of a truth
            which remains beyond the reach of all theory
            in the depths of God’s love for humanity.
            They reveal the gravity, cost, and sure achievement        of God’s reconciling work.
God calls us to respond to the Word
Prayers of Intercession
The Lord’s Prayer
            Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.
Offering
          As you depart you may place your offerings in the plates
         stationed near the shelter.
*Doxology
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Christ, all people here below;
Praise Holy Spirit evermore;
Praise Triune God, whom we adore.  Amen.
*Hymn #634            To God Be the Glory         to god be the glory
            To God be the glory
            Great things He has done
            So loved He the world that He gave us His Son
            Who yielded His life an atonement for sin
            And opened the life-gate that all may go in

            Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
            Let the earth hear His voice
            Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
            Let the people rejoice
            O come to the Father
            Through Jesus the Son
            And give Him the glory
            Great things He has done

            Great things He has taught us,
            great things He has done
            And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son
            But purer, and higher, and greater will be
            Our wonder, our worship, when Jesus we see

            Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
            Let the earth hear His voice
            Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
            Let the people rejoice
            O come to the Father
            Through Jesus the Son
            And give Him the glory
            Great things He has done

* Benediction

Prayers for the Week

Morning

As the sun rises, Lord, Let your light shine on me.
Destroy the darkness about me, Scatter the darkness before me,
Disperse the darkness behind me, Dispel the darkness within me.
Let your light shine on me.

As the sun rises, Lord, Let your light shine on me.
The warmth of your Presence, The brightness of your love,
The radiance of your joy, The shining of your hope.
Let your light shine on me.

As the sun rises, Lord, Let your light shine on me.
Your light to guide, Your light to lead,
Your light to direct, Your light to brighten.
Let your light shine on me.

-- David Adam, in “Power Lines: Celtic Prayers About Work”

Evening

Long warm days...
The pace of life slows...
A time for picnics and rest in the shade...
Lord, help me to rest awhile
in the cooling shade of your presence.
Slow down my restless heart and
fill me with gentle compassion for all your people.
