Celebrate 15 With Us!

This October will mark the 15th anniversary of Sylvan Heights Bird Park, and to celebrate, we’re bringing back BOTH of our signature events!  Previously cancelled due to COVID, our 2021 Birds, Brews and BBQ event will take place on October 9th, along with the grand opening of our newest aviary, The Birds of Paradise.  On October 23rd, we’ll be hosting our 2021 Annual Fundraiser, and this year’s theme is The Year of The Flamingo. Tickets sales for both events begin August 9th.  Stay tuned to our website, Facebook, and Instagram for more information!

Introducing our Rhinoceros Hornbills!

Two Rhinoceros Hornbills are now on exhibit in a spacious new aviary located next to the tree house! Native to the tropical forests of Borneo, Sumatra, Java, and Malaysia, these large arboreal birds feed primarily on fruit, but may also eat insects and small animals. They are named for the large orange horn, called a "casque", on the top of their bill. The casque is hollow, made of keratin, and is thought to help amplify the sound of their calls in the forest.

Recent Hatches at the Avian Breeding Center

The months of May, June, and July mark the peak of the hatching season at the Sylvan Heights Avian Breeding Center. Here are just a few of the many new arrivals!

Community Support

Did you know that our birds eat more than 6 tons of specially-formulated waterfowl diet every month?  Thanks to a generous donation by Smithfield Foods and Hog Slat, Inc., a new system of silos and augers now allows our aviculture team to store and access this feed much more efficiently. Thank you, Smithfield Foods and Hog Slat, Inc, for the gift to our birds and staff!
Local farmer Ronnie Fleming recently directed a $2,500 Bayer Fund America’s Farmers Grow Communities donation to Sylvan Heights Bird Park. Sylvan Heights Bird Park will use the funds to support their ongoing conservation and environmental education programs.

Pollinator Paradise

A pollinator garden next to our overflow parking area is now open! The garden features native plants that will help support bees, butterflies, and other important pollinator species.

Sylvan Heights Bird Park thanks the B. W. Wells Stewardship Fund and the NC Native Plant Society for supporting this project.
If you like what we do at Sylvan Heights Bird Park, please consider making a donation. Your support helps us continue our mission to educate the next generation about the importance of conserving waterfowl and wetlands, as well as our conservation programs that help preserve some of the world's rarest birds.
